How to populate left-hand pane of start menu

Bear with me, I've forgotten how to do this: how do I get applications to be listed in the left-hand pane of the start menu when I hit the start8 button? At the moment all the things I chose during the configure section appear on the right, but I never saw an option for what to choose to appear in the left-hand pane. If I click "show all applications" I see everything I want, but how to get things to appear by default? Thanks.

The items in the left hand side are the applications that have been used recently. These should be auto populating based upon which apps you are using. If nothing is showing up there, make sure the following is checked in the Start8 settings.

If you are referring to pinning items to Start8, right click over an icon \ application and select, 'Pin to Start menu (Start8)':
