Contrast issue when zoomed out (external monitor connected from my lapper via HDMI)

Hi - long time sins fan - have my new gaming setup and all games are running fine i returned to sins just a few min ago in prep for a lan we are having tonight. When i am ingame the contrast fades and it is very dark when zoomed out on my external monitor (set up to duplicate my laptop screen)

All other games work grand and if i look at my laptop screen the colours are fine when i am zoomed out - its on this external screen - tested with another screen and the same issue.

is this a technical issue or have i just missed something in the in game settings

fresh in stall of win 7 b4bit all drivers up to date

tried without duplicated screen so my desktop is external display only - same issue.

tried with my mates laptop with another external screen through VGA - same issue
