Champion Upgrade Paths

While playing I have gotten plenty of mileage from the Mage, Defender, and Warrior upgrade paths for champions, but Assassin has always ended up disappointing me. (Governor is odd too, in that I have to take them into combat to level them, but I want to leave them in my cities.) Compared to Warrior Assassin is much flimsier and they have less damage. Is there a specific set of traits or gear I should give them? Or should I just make anyone I want on the frontlines a warrior or defender?

I read in a few places that this 'class' is broken. I would suggest modding the 'CoreAbilities.xml' file and up the chance to crit alot and damage on crit a little. Also I know of at least one person (not me) that edited the Adventurer Guild to have a 100% chance to give 10 experience to level up the governor types. I think that is extremely high, but it is up to you.

Whoever claims that the assassin is 'broken' is simply wrong.

The assassin is arguably the most versatile class in 1.02, and has been so since at least .913

I level my sovereign into an assassin 90% of the time, and I can't complain about the way he performs.  The first post of this thread has links to the play-throughs in which assassin sovereigns (and supporting heroes) kick ass.  I also plan to level the sovereign in that thread into an assassin, but it has not happened yet - it's still on turn 9.

I would also note that much of an Assassin's drawback is a lack of reliable damage. Warriors and Mages always have a bonus, where Assassins sometimes have a bonus. It's overall about equal, but less reliable. That matters quite a bit. And then again, the stacking of crit damage can get so insane, you just don't care if the first or third strike is the one that crits.

I think assassins are great as long as you have some way of generating a decent base damage in the early to mid game. A really good weapon, Might, some Lethal traits, burning blade with a couple of fire shards, etc.

Assassins gains access to double strike, its all I need :D
I can never seem to get the dodge traits though.

when they say that assassin is "broken", i would assume they mean, a hidously broken overpowered damage dealer, not a broken unit that does not work as designed.
