There are resources metal nodes, magic nodes, etc, in an area called the Scrap/Bone yard, I picked up the loot but can't build an outpost to access the resources nodes !!
kill all the unit stacks and visit each of the spots, then the wildland will disapear, THEN you can outpost and even build a few towns in it (I suggest one at each end and one in the middle)

Those areas are Wild Lands. It's what the game meant by 'conquering the land' in the opening cinematic. They come in different colours and flavours. They often have a Deadly level Boss which will make the land free for you to expand into.
