Gimp

From time to time I have noticed a reference to GIMP, a grachics program. I realize it is an open source program, and am curious about it. I would like to bring the topic up to the community. Rants? Raves? I currently run XP Pro and am interested in getting my feet wet with the creative side of things? Any thoughts on this program?

Taken from the Gimp homepage ( http://www.gimp.org )

"The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring."

The latest stable versio can be downloaded from http://www.gimp.org/downloads/stable_ver.html

Hope this helps

It's the first program I used for graphics. I feel it's a good program from which you could learn about creating graphics.

I got gimp and found it kind of confusing. I had been using the free version of Image Forge, which I found much more user friendly. (I bought it for about $30 and later bought paint shop pro, but I still use Image Forge mostly -- no time to learn PSP).

You can get a version for Windows here: http://www.wingimp.org/

There's a bit of a learning curve for Gimp (much like PS), but it's very flexible and can do pretty much what PhotoShop can.

A pretty thorough tutorial on Gimp is available at: http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/

Enjoy

I see that Gimp has a version for windows, for those of you who use Gimp, is it compatable with XP, the website fails to mention it specifically.

I'm using it on XP Pro with no problems. The first few ports of Gimp were pretty touchy, but they've gotten much better. Just use the latest version you can find, you shouldn't have any significant problems with it.

Basically, The GIMP is a free photoshop. I love it, personally.. You're not going to find most of the filters, but its a great program for just about any kind of imaging.

For those of you with XP and Gimp, is the windows installer an obsolute necessity? Or do I go with the most stable version? I have downloaded the installer, but haven't loaded it yet. Awaiting your responses...........thanx for the tips I have received already!

yes, you need the installer. the update only replaces the gimp.exe file, not the other stuff. also the installer will install GTK for windows. GIMP uses this for it´s GUI widgets (scrollbar, butons).

did somebody mention that it´s cool to use GIMP with a WB theme that has an on-top button
