Quest of Mastery Bugged or just stuck?

This is my first game since Beta 2, and if I'm just being ignorant please somebody let me know.

So, the original (i.e. what I experienced in Beta 2) Quest of Mastery involved the dragon statues, getting the gems, fighting a mercenary army under a guy called Arneson, and then beating multiple dragons and their leader, then - ta da - you've won the game.

It appears that most of that quest is still in the Beta 5 game I'm playing -  I already got the one dragon gem. However, when I go to get the second one, I pay the old woman 20 crystal, she says she'll tell me where Arneson can be found, and then doesn't. No further info, nothing on the map. Quest dead (apparently).

However, this same map has the "pit of doom" adventure region, the one with the long history about Curgon and Samarra. I've made it through the first gate, and when I got to the second one, lo and behold behind it there's a big red nasty dragon and the game says my quest has become "kill waerloga the dragonlord". I.e. the same goal as the other quest of mastery. I can't get through the second gate because the location I need to get to is trapped behind the cities of my allies. And, despite the fact that I'm by now some all-powerful godling summoner, I apparently can't (a) just walk through an ally's city, (b ) climb over the mountains, (c) swim or boat around the coast, or (d) I dunno, friggin teleport or something?

So, I guess my questions are:

- Is the problem with the first version of the Quest of Mastery a bug? Maybe it's conflicting with the second version when the two are on the same map?

- Any suggestions as to how I can get to the "trapped" quest location so I can try completing the second version (ie. "pit of doom") of the Mastery Quest? (It is blocked by coast on top, mountains on the bottom, and an allied city on each side - right now I'm hoping to level up my beginning earth mage to the point where he can lower land on the mountains if that spell is even still available) (oh, and, before someone suggests it, I can't be bothered to declare war: it wouldn't be fun - my hero stack is so superior to anything on the map that it would just be a boring slog)

Thanks!

1. No, it is not necessarily a bug.  It's not the quest for Mastery, either.  The two quests are now completely separate.  As for it being buggy, I am not sure.  If you have the quest icon in your list, you can probably complete it.  When I did it, I remember that I was wandering around looking for stuff that I could not get by clicking on the icon.

2. You can raise and lower terrain with the Earth school, but only if the target is out of your ally's sphere of influence.  Constructing a land bridge may be your best bet.  If you have Enchanters and Air magic, there's more you can do, but you do not sound as if you do.

Ah, they're separate now! Ok, that makes more sense. Just didn't get far enough in either to figure that out. On reload the 'Free Rider Compound' has now appeared on the map, so I can proceed with that one.

As for the land bridge, hopefully I don't have to do that outside of their borders, or it's going to take awhile. My sovereign has maxed out as an air mage, though I couldn't see anything that would help. What in particular are you suggesting?

If you have Enchanters and Air Mage, you create an arcane monolith behind the city that's blocking you, and then cloud walk.
