Fences (public) will not install

from Stardock Forums

When installing public version of Fences, my Win XP/SP3 laptop (freshly installed) shows "The following requirements must be processed before starting setup: Microsoft NET 2.0.

 

I have NET 4.0 on my laptop but am still not able to install (public) Fences.  Help!

<@Rosco_P> The "fun" part with .NET is that subsequent versions don't contain the previous versions, so you need them all installed.  It makes a certain kind of sense, but only after working with it for a while.  On the consumer side of things, it only seems to create confusion.

Added "fun": Windows 8 only comes with 4.5 installed.  You have to manually install the others.  Fortunately, there's a way from within the OS, but it's not exactly front and center:
