How does one enter this crater?, can't seem to get the gate open or lower the mountains around it and there is no quest pop up that i can find.
The gated wild area is the location of the master quest, which I think is not yet fully implemented in this beta. You might try visiting the 3 dragon statues and doing their quests to see if the gate unlocks, but as I said I don't think it's implemented.

Get enough +sight items (Amulet of the Eagle, Compass, Telescope) and you'll see that there is Waerloga the Dragonlord (93 Atk, 49 Def, 107 HP; Lvl 1(?!)) locked inside.
I'm pretty sure that's where Waerloga the Dragon Lord is imprisoned. It's a Wild land, but unimplemented (a lot of them are buggy). If you build a city close by and expanding it enough (for the sight), you'll be able to see him sitting on his dragon wearing all kinds of cool gear.

thats kinda lame cause the dragon quests get you the ability to fight him so its just wasted map i guess 
Its going to be a blockage in releases where the quest is available anyways, its kind of sad you cant win by quests ATM... but I think it will always be a blockage in the world, and that is the reason to include it, because at the time any player can enter and defeat the guardians, the player will WIN the game.

Maybe AI players should be allowed to win that way on harder difficulty settings, instead of being blocked from doing so. <wicked grin>
no you can win by quests i did it last night you do the dragon statue quests and you fight that dragon born guy.
