WindowBlinds application compatibility issues

WindowBlinds application compatibility issues

It has come to our attention that some people may have had issues with some apps and WB and opted not to tell anyone about it.

Obviously we would like to know about them so we can resolve the issues.

If you have had an issue with an app caused by being skinned by WB, please post the following information in this thread:

1) The app name

2) The OS you are using

3) The theme you are using

4) The problem you have encountered

5) If you did report it to support a ticket number would help.

If the issue is visual a screenshot would help and where the app is more unusual we would like to know where we may be able to obtain a trial or demo version of it from.

Please note that we are not looking for bug reports on making skins here.  This is specifically for application issues.

I have been using Start8 and Windows Blinds for months with no problems on Windows 8 Pro.

I upgraded SeaMonkey 2.20 yesterday to the latest version 2.21.  2.20 (and earlier versions) worked fine with Windows Blinds. But 2.21 has a problem that I think is related to Windows Blinds.  I have thoroughly troubleshooted SeaMonkey (tried SafeMode, tried a new Profile, etc) and I still have the problem.  I have not turned off Windows Blinds to be certain incompatibility with it is the problem as the only reason I am still on Windows 8 Pro (instead of having "downgraded" to Windows 7 Pro) is because I have Start 8 and Windows Blinds so I can't bear to turn off Windows Blinds even briefly.

The problem is with SeaMonkey 2.21 not properly minimizing to the Taskbar and then not maximizing correctly. I use Win 8 Style with substyle of Win 8 and my own customization of font, colors, desktop background, etc. I have the taskbar on full transparency.  After I minimize SeaMonkey to the taskbar (not pinned...but pinning makes no difference with the problem) when I mouse hover over the SeaMonkey icon, I do NOT see a thumbnail of the SeaMonkey window I minimized. Instead, I see a vertical transparent list of all tabs.  If I try to maximize the SeaMonkey window, it will not maximize unless I click on the bottom most tab that is shown vertically. When I do that then a SECOND window opens maximized slightly off center and behind it is the normal SeaMonkey window that I minimized and it is opened full screen. I have to try and close the top window and then I have SeaMonkey properly maximized on the window underneath. I go through this hassle every time I minimize SeaMonkey and then want to maximize it again.  I can see on the Taskbar that there appears to be three SeaMonkey windows stacked but there is actually only the one that I minimized. I cannot access the other two windows that appear to be there.

This is a 10 month old desktop computer that runs 24/7.  I usually  have several browsers open at the same time so I minimize to the taskbar frequently. I rarely close a browser (or reboot).  So, given how I use my computer this problem is particularly irritating.  My default browser is Firefox 17.0.9 ESR and it works fine with Windows Blinds but I am worried that when the new ESR version 24 is pushed (by internal update) around the first of 2014 that it too may have this problem.

I'm not sure how to add screenshots here so here's a link to where I have screenshots showing the problem.

Google Chrome dev-m Aura builds, both Windows 8.0 and 8.1.  Titlebar is completely transparent, and no controls.  Also a gap between the window border and the actual window.

Likely due to the new hardware accelerated UI.

OpenGL accelerated windows such as Minecraft do not render the window border properly, also in both Windows 8.0 and 8.1.  Instead, the border has a "classic" style and is translucent.

If the OpenGL context is in a child window, for example in my programming project DXGL, the borders render fine.

1. FrameMaker 11

2. Windows 8 Pro (9200.win8_gdr.130306-1502)
WindowBlinds 8.01 (020 - Windows 8 Edition) - 64 bit OS

3. Any skin

4. Even though I configured WindowBlinds to ignore FrameMaker.exe (and every other exe I could find in the Frame directory), having WB loaded with any skin causes the right side pane to become corrupted and essentially unusable. As soon as I unload WindowBlinds, everything displays correctly again.

5. No ticket number yet.

Techno,

Have you messed around with the compatibility settings for the app rather than just outright blocking it altogether?  It might provide some insight to the devs and maybe a possible solution in there somewhere.  It might be something to try while you await an official response.  It's helped me in the past, at least.

Regards

1) The app name

Firefox

Waterfox (64bit firefox version)

Cyberfox (64bit firefox version) <-- Currently used fox version here.

Basically any *fox it seems.

2) The OS you are using

Currently Windows 8.1, but issue was already present in 8.0

3) The theme you are using

Any theme used that isn't the default theme.

4) The problem you have encountered

COMPLETE transparancy  of titlebar, toolbars and tab area (I have my tabs vertical)

Link to screenshot: http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6798/b37p.png

When using "default theme": http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/34/y1bu.png

When excluding Cyberfox in WB settings: http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1322/urkx.png

5) If you did report it to support a ticket number would help.

No. Don't know what to write there.

Excluding Cyberfox makes it look horrible.

Having it fully transparent makes it unusable. (And I use it a lot)

Therefor I can only stick with the default theme till I figure what can fix this. :(

GTX2Gv0: It looks like some setting in your firefox may have become corrupted as it looks like FireFox is telling the OS it wants the entire background of the window to be treated as transparent.  This is a very bad thing to tell the OS because it comes with significant performance implications.

I imagine it is something to do with that bar on the right hand side.

End of Neil's quote

That's my tab bar. And I want it there.

Disabling it doesn't help though.
(and I can't work with all my tabs cramped on the top)

Disabling anything that might cause any "Forced" transparency, doesn't help either.
With the default theme it would look horrible and with a skin on, the titlebar and certain elements are still transparent.
(Creating a mix of horribly looking and unusable features)
I also seem to loose my minimize, maximize and close buttons in that case.

Hell. I even looked if disabling WindowFX 5 would do any difference.
Which doesn't happen to be the case. :/

You will need to switch back to the default FireFox theme as I just realised you must be using a custom one.  You will also need to remove any exclusions from WB for FireFox.

I only have the default theme as I used Stylish to alter the general look of firefox.

Disabling stylish (and related components) + Other add-ons that might have effect on the UI only gave the above mentioned results.
(Already was ahead of you on that one)

Exclusions have already been removed. (no need to keep it if it's not working)

This seems to be more mis then hit for me.

Will still be looking further into this myself.

As there is no point for me to do any skinning if Firefox itself can't be skinned with it.
(as it's what I use the most)

Hmm. Interesting.

I've noticed the Flip3D from WindowFX is suffering from the same full transparency issue as firefox.

But then regardless of which theme is being used. (thus including the default theme)

So the only thing I see when I flip a window is the text that should be in it and any Icon/image presented on the flip window.
(Although really hard to read)

I think this might be related somehow.

If you have had an issue with an app caused by being skinned by WB, please post the following information in this thread:

1) Warcraft III Frozen Throne

2) Windows 7/8 both had the same issue

3) Precision.. All the skin had the same issue

4) Application not skinned, no title bar no side and bottom bar.

I found a workaround for getting WB working in my firefox, by using "old" menu bar instead of dropdown menu bar.

Just a quick report.

I am using Celestia, which is a free (open source) astronomy software. I am also running WindowBlinds 8.02 on Windows 8.1. When the Win8 skin is selected, Celestia's title bar and menu are not displayed properly (a screenshot is attached). To fix this, I launch Celestia, then I launch WindowBlinds and switch to the Default Theme. The application is then properly displayed. The menus will keep being displayed correctly after switching back to the Win8 theme. Yet, when Celestia is relaunched, the artifacts reappear. Celestia can be obtained here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/celestia/files/Celestia-win32-bin/1.6.1/celestia-win32-1.6.1.exe/download

Thanks!

1) Adobe Reader XI

2) windows 8.1

3) all of them

4) the program is not skined.

End of ArielAleXCo's quote

This is normal as Adobe reader uses a sandbox by default which prevents WB from being able to access skin files, so it leaves it as Windows 8 themed.

1. chrome beta

2. windows 8.1

3. all of them

4. memory leak when loading pages causing browser to stop responding. with memory on one of chrome processes reaching 2.7gb

sometimes happens while listen to music on youtube video and facebooking and would happen alot throughout the day.

telling windowblinds not to skin chrome fixes the problem.

extensions in chrome

adblock plus

weatherbug

roboform.

smooth wheel scroll.

disabling extenstions had no effect on the memory leak.

!. Virtualbox

2, Windows 7 64 bit

3. Endeavour, I haven't tried any other themes.

4. The title bar is completely invisible including the close, minimize, and maximize buttons. The title and little icon do show up, though. This problem persists even if I exclude it from themeing. I even tried excluding the VboxSVC application, and it didn't work.

Hi, I'm new here and a happy new year to you all. Good information here and really nice stuff.

I'm using windowsblind, but only the Default Theme is working. Trying all other themes and with all programs/windows explorer, the minimize, maximize and close buttons aren't visible. Only when I hoover with my mouse there and just click, I see them very briefly and the command is executed.

I already tried a lot from the information I got here and on the wincustomize forum (reinstalling WB, reapplying the themes, restarting etc), but I'm stuck.

I have an Object Desktop subscription with all the programms installed from the suite and so far those do run fine so far. Running W8.1 x64. BTW I filed a ticket about this just now.

Update:

Stardock support send me a special bat file to uninstall wb8, after a restart and a new install of wb8 everythings works now :)

Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate, OD+ 2.1 and latest WB.  When I click the Start icon I get only half the start menu.  The right half is cut off.  This only happens when running a non-MS blind in WB.  Sometimes, if the PC is slightly slow, I can see it actually paints the entire menu and then blanks the right side so it's completely transparent.  I haven't found a Stardock or 3rd party blind that doesn't exhibit the problem.  Reinstalling OD, WB and even WFx has had no effect.  This problem did not happen when I was running Vista 64 bit Ultimate, but that was with the Vista version of WB.  Stardock support was unable to help.  My workaround is for the strt icon to invoke the start menu through a script rather than the built-in OD docklet.

Anyone else experiencing this?

1) Anuko World Clock (http://www.anuko.com/world_clock/)

2) Windows 8.1 64bit

3) Lantana (but applies to any skin)

4) With both WindowBlinds 8.02 and worldclock loaded, windows explorer continuously freezes display of the taskbar (no taskbar)(taskbar set as unlocked and autohide) with high cpu useage of > 50% for explorer.exe. If explorer.exe restarted in task manager then the taskbar unfreezes and becomes available again. However, as soon as a process uses explorer.exe the freeze and high cpu issue recurs and, usually, I have to go into Task Manager and restart explorer.exe to regain the task bar. Occasionally, explorer.exe can recover on its own but if it does it requires several moments waiting, and then more often than not, it just remains at high cpu and an unusable task bar. The system itself does not freeze, I can continue using programs etc, I just have no access to the taskbar and/or explorer.exe directly and, of course, responsiveness is affected due to high cpu usage.

The only way I was able to get the two programs to work together was to completely exclude the skinning of explorer.exe in WindowBlinds configuration - tried various and sundry combinations of exclusions but the only one that worked was to exclude the entire thing. Excluding any or parts of worldclock did not work. Of course, excluding exporer.exe meant no taskbar skinning or skinning of any other explorer.exe system windows. Finally I disabled Anuko World Clock from auto starting, removed explorer.exe from any exclusions and, voila, everything under Windows 8.1 and WindowBlinds 8.02 now skin nicely with no further hangs of the taskbar or high explorer.exe cpu usage. Has been working stably for a couple days now. But as soon as I start-up or reload Anuko World Clock, the tasbar and explorer cpu issues are back.

Conclusion: Anuko World Clock, however it hooks into Windows Explorer, is not compatible with WindowBlinds. As a note, prior to using WindowBlinds I encountered no issues with World Clock and have used it under XP, Vista, Win7 and Win8/8.1 for a few years now.

 5) Issue not reported to either vendor.
