Fences Pro crashes but free version works.

Fences Pro crashes Windows Explorer but the free version works flawlessly.

I have bought Fences reasonably recently and now i find it doesn't seem to work. It seems to be crashing Windows Explorer and i can't seem to find out why.

After i uninstalled the Pro version and also Impulse, i installed the Free version of Fences and it works without a problem. It seem quite strange that the version i haven't payed a dime for works and the one i had to shell out cash for went belly up.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Professional with Aero enabled and an ATI 6800 graphics card.

Is there any way i can get the pro version to work? If not, where can i get a refund?

Dikd you try running a cleaner like CCleaner after the uninstall? Sometimes files are left behind after an app is uninstalled. Try uninstalling the free version and running CCleaner. If you don't have it you can get it here.

Reboot then re-install the paid version. Sometimes that does the trick. Hope this helps.

Well i didn't run ccleaner but i did run another another cleaner after the reboot after i uninstalled but it didn't help.

Fences Pro crashes no matter if i install it using Impulse or the stand-alone executable from the Stardock website.

If no other comes along with an answer send email to support@stardock.com. Wait for a reply and don't send another because that one will put you back at the end of the line.

I found out, on my own, that some files in the user folder were the culprit, but i couldn't find out which ones so i recreated the user and lo and behold, Fences is not crashing Explorer anymore. I have no idea how a user file/folder could crash Explorer, maybe one of those 32 character hexadecimally named folders/files were the problem (named like XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX), or maybe some NTFS permission or something.

I'm glad you found it because I didn't.

Could you update your ticket with the user name you were using so we can trouble shoot it at SD HQ?

Don't know for sure about Win7's User Folder, but the old Documents & Settings folder would get corrupted relatively easily in XP and cause all kinds of weirdness.  I had to create a new user 2 or 3 times while I was using XP.  Appears the User Folder in Win7 is susceptible, too.  Good you sorted it out so quickly.  Took me a long time to figure it out the first time.

Do you have any special characters in your username?  Are you on a non-English installation?
