I think *bold* is easier to do than bold, and it's already part of normal message writing, so it's very intuitive.

Hmmm...that second bold in my message had the html open and closing codes for bold around it, but I guess the message editor trapped it, even though it didn't make the word bold.

Hopefully, you got my point.
