better than the bar being closed

Yes, the words "last call" should never be spoken together.

It all depends on just how many people we really want to get upset.
If the bar were properly raised to a truly 'exclusive' level, a large number of artists would have nothing accepted at all.

If you wish, the cull can be more brutal, and a lot of egos will suffer.

It is a delicate, thin line between 'art' and 'wallpaper'...some walls may be a little 'simplistic' or even 'naive', but can be valid wallpapers, found popular by many.

I personally can get a lot more brutal.
I could maintain the cull to about 500 as a consistent number of walls...as more come and are better than those there already, maybe others then get kicked, maintaining the total.

To give an example of how aggressive I would/could be, click on my name.
I have two 'walls', very average popularity, but rating a '7' and a '9'.
They are very definitely 'artwork', as they both were actually painted water-colours, and only afterwards, manipulated on computer.
They show a certain ability....
BUT...
They don't necessarily work as walls.
Why?
Subject matter, I assume, hence the unwild download number.

They would be culled by me, because although they may have had more effort in their creation than a blue swirlie with 'XP' slapped on it, they don't seem to cut it as wallpapers.

I won't play favourites, you realize.
Even those of you able to upload without going through the moderation process can be moderated.
I have been through the ENTIRE wall section 3 times in the past week.
I know it well.
28 existing walls met their waterloo yesterday.

Just say the word.
Call it the night of the long knives.....
It can be done.

But it will hurt a little.

Opinions?.....

Let's not be too brutal.

When I look at a wallpaper I make 2 judgements:

1) Does it make a GOOD wallpaper -- i.e. is it usable? if the answer is yes, then it can be something relatively simple and bland.

2) If it's not a super great wallpaper, then the artwork quality has to be much greater. Scenery, for instance, had better be pretty freakin good scenery to survive when I do my occasional moderation.

digitaljames... have you been drinking?

hehe

raise the bar too high and only (3) artist I know of will get em in! =/

Alternatively, you could subject all submitted walls to "Mr. Crowley's Eye of Artistic Righteousness", I think that this may be the best solution for all in the long term.

I deleted two of my walls from the site yesterday. They had been rated once, and given a score of 1. I was sad to see them rated that way, as I don't really believe my work is that bad, but I deleted them anyway.
This is why I hate this rating system, especially as it's anonymous. If people had to leave their name with their rating I believe they would not rate at all, as there would be questions asked of them if they rated something ridiculously low for no apparent reason. Please get rid of the ratings, or make people leave their names when they do.
I was so ashamed to receive a rating of 1, that I am considering just doing my DX themes, and not upping any more walls. How can I call myself a Journeyman, if I can only get a rating of 1 on something that took me 12 hours to make?

Bryan, I may have seen them all, but I certainly haven't put a rating on all of them...I only have a 56k modem.....and one trip through the wallpaper department took me 7 hours....

That's a real shame BoXXi....there's NO-WAY that any of your work deserves to get a rating of 1 !!!!! ....Whoever gave you that rating should not be able to rate anymore!!

Rating something requires a fair amount of thought before you hit the button i think.....if you don't have the maturity to do it properly then don't do it at all!!

No Alex, I did make a couple of joke XP walls a while ago, and even they are rated o.k.
Hmm, that's not on, I'd be happy to have my name associated with any ratings I've given, along with any number of reasons from the classic, "I'm jealous of your obvious talent" to the ever faithful "I'm having a bad day and have no other way to work out my frustrations". Actually I'm serious, maybe an ability to have your rating posted in the header of your comment of the piece would be beneficial to artists, giving them the opportunity to see what people did and didn't like about their work. I know that you can give your opinions in the comments section, but I just think a way to rate along with posting your comment would be good.

OK, Bryan...had a closer look at your walls..just to see what was happening. Some of them had no 'actual' rating, only getting the default Journeyman-number'5' when you upload.
I have been though most of 'em and checked to see that I have rated, and/or commented.
Gee you have a lot of walls....

Whats up with that comment David? For what its worth, the entire thread today and my original is a result of a very brutal "you have been moderated" sent by you to one of the Citizens. I suppose you were born with the current level of graphics/skinning talent you have? My point is valid and should be discussed inteligently. As an Admin you should display more professionalism for other artists. If you have an issue with my stand we can debate via e-mail instead of sling opines here. What it's really about is displaying skins/walls etc. that say "This is my contribution to Wincustomize because I am a member of the community and I have been inspired by the other artists here. Maybe this piece will inspire someone else" not "Cool, I am an Artist because a 5 minute trip down the Bryce/Photoshop menus got posted."

P.S. Someone go ahead and tell me that I have effectively black listed myself here....

digitaljames... here is your entire post:

on Wall submissions.... !!vomit!!

You say your point is valid? I saw no point at all... I couldn't figure out at all what you were trying to say.

Moderation seems to be rubbing some people the wrong way. The reasons for it have been stated many times in threads on this message board. Plus, I don't believe anything I've sent back to an artist that was moderated could be described as "brutal".

I try to respond to all the emails I get and I know I try to be polite and helpful. There have only been a few emails I got that were angry and rude in their tone, and even those I tried to respond in the same way.

If you have sometrhing constructive to say about the moderation process I'd be glad to hear it. The word vomit is a bit too vague for me, sorry... try to put a few more words together next time if you want to be seriously responded to. (like this response to your last post)

David,
My post subject = So much for the bar being raised
My content = on wall submissions... That would be the point. Shall I post your email response to a skinner verbatim? I've been to your site and your work is awesome to say the least but to someone like say Frank Frazetta your work would be "amatuerish". The guidlines talked about the other day were loosely based around moderating "quickie filter fests" and work created with 3d applications in obviously "under 3 minutes"...and I think the majority would be happy to have those culled. In my "opinion", that standard has not been in use the last few days...Here's my suggestion for the moderations. Let all the walls through. If they don't get 300 downloads in 5 days they get whacked by a script. Easy peasy japaneesy. Just out of curiosity, how many walls get modded per day on average?

DJ

c'mon, the vomit thing is cool

digitaljames: I totally agree with DavidK, your first post was really ununderstandeble to me and totally desagree with you, I know Dave during the last 2 years and never saw him being rude or non profesional with anybody. In fact, he is one of the most kind persons on this cummunity.
Treedog, I am quite sure David is as you say he is. He would not hold the stature in the community he possesses if otherwise. There are behind the scenes issues with another Citizen. I have seen the e-mail in question and it is quite as I described it. I have also seen the wall that was moderated. Based on what gets posted here daily, it did not deserve moderation nor the comments in the rejection e-mail. I have absolutely no issues with David personally, just opinions on the apparent lack of consistancy with the moderations. You opinion is noted and respected. Please state your views on the moderation procedure. Your opinion means a lot given your quality of skin submissions.

OOo someone got moderated and didn't like it.

haha I was wondering what this thread was about!

Purrrr...

hehe sorry, just had to do it again!
