Portraits are really messed up in 1.20

I haven't deleted any units or their portraits between patches, so I don't know if that is causing the problem. The units all start out with the correct portrait, then they get messed up. Some portraits are missing, then they reappear, but usually not. Some are mixed up with champion's portraits. Here is a chronological series of portrait mixups.

No portrait for the forward observer.

A little later, no portrait for the forward observer or guardian.

Later, the guardian has his portrait but the Kings Ward adopted a champion's portrait. Forward Observer still missing portrait.

A little later in the game, the Baron lost his portrait. I don't have a good picture of that but you can see the black box in my other thread about ZOC.

Are you saying that you are using an old save game with the new patches?

Nooooo. I'm just using the old folders for the units and sovs (haven't deleted anything). Always start a new game for each patch. Haven't really had a problem like this with the portraits until 1.19n.

already seen it in 1.19m, and now in 1.19n, after an hour or more into a game

restarting the game seemed the only way of seeing the portraits again

New game and in the summer of 202 some champions lost their portraits. It lasted a couple of turns, then they reappeared. I have never seen this before.

All the black icons are champions.

I have been noticing this effect since about 1.19d, and it is definately getting WORSE, it used to only effect the notables, now it is infecting autodesigned units, not even my custom designed units have been spared, about the ONLY units that have not had the issue to date are the peasants and settlers, all other units get this issue in my experience, and hopefully the peasants and settlers WILL NOT get infected.

I believe if you edit the champion's card and just save it (without changing anything), it will refresh the icons - I think. Not ideal, but I believe a workaround instead of restarting the game.

It's merely a cosmetic error for the game really... bit of an eyesore of a cosmetic error but not a game breaking one mind you.

There is still a lot of portrait switching going on.
