After a week testing XP

First the ui looked great, eye-candy as hell, pretty nice and real fast so i said "wow!, this os rules!", not only the windows or objects, but everything, even the folder/file description or options looked integrated, precise scrollers and all looked nice, "WOOOW!, the best OS ever!", that was the most stupid thing i ever said, after some days the UI didnt look so nice as before, just another MS default everybody will have soon, tiring and common, the stupid folder/file description and options that looked so good before now started to being a pain in the neck, seems like windows is starting to become another macos where is very easy to use the PC but very hard to get all the potential because all the "Wizards" or "Fast and Easy" stuff all around, its well know that the more easy the less power, Linux is a great example, after a while i installed WindowBlinds XP because Luna was starting to became boring, i noticed most Windows 2000 drivers worked on Windows XP, even the usage is very similar not to said equal, same stuff, but all the "easy to use" stuff is still there, and doesnt wants to go, i go back again to Windows 2000... now that was the same looking different, but heck, at last i can move freely around the system, not funny fading menus, just file name and preview, i can configure the web look of my folders freely again to match WB skins, off course you can turn most of XP funny stuff off, but why should i pay for that?, why should i keep the same hardware so XP activation dont complain? why should i paid anually?, windows 2000 is and looks like is going to be the best MS OS ever, XP is just... XP, can get that with some 3rd party companys as Stardock, its going to be more wise to stick with the fast and powerfull Windows 2000 and waste my money on something more necesary like advanced english lessons so i can stop posting with so many errors
Off course you cant trust Microsoft, is more like they are going to make winxp no comaptible with win2k so users cant stick with it and use the newest apps... Viva Linux!, not the most easy, not the faster, not the best looking, but the best OS ever. So what now? should i check my gramm? Nah!

oh, and by the way, the "e" drive was formatted, there is no sight of XP anymore... just the stupid boot menu, but going to fix this right away.

Is Linux the best OS ever because you have to manually mount your removable drives, or is it the short list of games that you can play on it, or is it the not-so-frequent driver updates? I forgot...

but I quit trying with Linux a while back...

Funny, most of the Linux Lovers in the newsgroups are posting with Outlook Express.

I think a lot of people are in love with the *idea* of Linux, but not so much the OS itself. It's an awesome OS, as long as they don't have to use it.

Not everybody, mind you, but a lot of people.

well, off course im using Windows, thats what i use the 90% off the time i spend on my PC, why?, is easy to answer, I have 110 (aprox) CDS for Windows and just 5 linux cds wich 2 of them are the OS, also im a developer and use DirectX often, and where i work all the system is using windows, only the web server use Linux, so whe the boss say "i need to bla bla bla" i need to program "bla bla bla", no way back, you know also why?, because all the ppl who search for a job and join our staff took one of those sh*ty MS Official Professional on Office 2000 (WOW!), they dont know a sh*t about pcs, cant even manage excel very well, but hell, that stupid paper, also the boss dont know a sh*t and think they are great and ready for the next millenium... so... no way back, need to continue, improving my windows C++ skills... off course im at home now, but what about if I feel like to playe Black & White?... and to be clear im not a Linux super fan, note i didnt said it was the faster or stable OS, just say is the best, i think Windows 2000 is equal or a little better than Linux, and Direct3D is the best RT 3D engine ever... Too bad anout XP being so stupid...

"super fan, note i didnt said it was the faster or stable OS, just say is the best, i think Windows 2000 is equal or a little better than Linux, and Direct3D"

Oh, that seems confusing, must be my english, Linux is the best OS because is great and also i can be sure about what does it wants from me (nothing), Windows 2000 may be better, but all that passport, .NET, and Privacy issues on IE6 s*cks.
You don't have to use passport or .NET, so that's a non-issue. What other IE6 privacy concerns do you have?

I agree with a lot of the stuff you said about XP, I don't like it either.

I'd have to disagree about linux being the best OS ever though. It IS the best free server OS ever, and that's what I use it for, but in terms of software support, ease of configuration and plain old ease of use balanced with the general power and feel of the OS, I'd have to say that Win2K is the finest desktop OS out there.

Linux is undeniably the most stable and the most flexible OS. Win2k is on the right track, but still not as powerful as Linux.
No, with Linux, you're talking big leagues here. Linux is everything an OS should be and what Windows should model after.
The problem with Linux is: lack of software support, and not as easy to use. But both of these have made immense progress in the last two years.
Yes, I use mainly Windows because I have to. But I have Linux as a dual boot.

Actually its Linux's tendency to be obscure on occasions that draws me to it. Its like one giant puzzle sometimes, and nothing beats the satisfaction of setting out to do somethings, struggling a bit(aka fiddling), then succeeding. If you can learn something with Linux, then apply it elsewhere, ie: windows, you've got it made.
Lack of games doesn't bother me. Besides the occasional office Half-Life tourney, I'm not a really much of a gamer.

You can have enough fun tinkering with a Windows' shell to ever need to bother with Linux....

True. I 'spose it all comes down to preference. And I prefer doing things the hard wayâ„¢.

Hmm, left myself wide open there.. Before I get slapped around for insinuating that steppin' is easy, I'll add that I had great fun setting it up the first time, (or couple of times.. heheh.).

Regardless of the fun we've all had tweaking Linux and Litestep, I still believe that XP is a terrible monster, and I pray for its death.

Hehe you think XP sucks... wait till their next OS. I saw a preview of it and it's like a complicated website. TOTALLY different.
radink - you've seen their "next OS"? I'd be willing to bet that what you saw or heard will be 99% different than what is shipped. At this stage of the game, it's purely speculation/ideas. I remember seeing screenshots of what "insiders" claimed were Windows XP screenshots....

I still don't get what sucks about XP... I've had no problems with WPA, it's very stable, it's compatable with more hardware/software than Win2k... You can turn off the themes if you don't like them, the CD burning intergrated into Windows Explorer kicks a$$, it reboots faster than Win2k (when you do have to reboot, which is not too often), loads of vendors are behind it, which means good driver support...

.. tell me again, why does it suck?

MS sucks, their actitud sucks and so many "easy to use" and "wizards" sucks, Windows 2000 is great, i agree, but when i set up NT servers, that total control is great as well, you see what it is, not bunch of fades over fades to supousdly make the OS easier, no, i read a post somewhere else that was very wise, was something like "I started to appreciate Windows 9x/NT UI when used XP". And once again all passport shit, off course you can not sign up, but when an end user try XP he thinks "look, i log on just once on passport, now i have my messanger, my mail (in the start panel that takes my directly to the inbox), my personalized browser (that also has my mail and my messanger inside)... hell, why should i download ICQ? or why should i get a Yahoo email? everything is so easy from here!", well thats right, is very confortable, but the fact is that use their OS (who is the most used) to advert all their other web services using it, is a monopoly, illegal, and a blame to capitalism. Off couse the end user dont care a shit and will use it anyway, so yeah, is great, isnt great that in the hotmail license is said they can sell or share you personal info... thats not great, think what could be done if they also monopoly web email, messanger app, credit card transactions... dont think it will be fun, Windows 2000 is being droped so you will need to buy XP, what about later?, when they have all such web services of their own, in the other hand Linux will be always Linux, a great OS who doesnt wants a shit from you.
But off course, maybe you just care about that so called "easy of use" and dont too much about free competition.
Oh!, and by the way, im using WinXP Metallic theme for WinCustomize, the fact i dont like XP doesnt means i cant do that, does it?, is just that on WinCustomize it looks cool
Reply #18 Top
Hum... didn't know that. Hotmail and MSN messenger is integrated into the OS? I pray it can be turned off!!
Hotmail has nothing to do with XP, though it's long been integrated in OE *if* you choose to use it. And yes, MSN Messenger can be disabled and/or removed.

Fa65*BFh - It's become apparent to me through this thread that you're letting your animosity towards Microsoft affect your overall opinion of XP. Is WinXP better than WinME? By far, yes. Is it better than Win2k? In many ways, yes? Is it worse than Win2k? I've yet to see an instance of that.

Everything that you recently mentioned (IM, Hotmail...) is an option and is up to you to use it or not. Other companies are free to include in the install of their products the option to place links to their stuff in the places where you currently se MS products. Hell, WindowBlinds now shows up right in display properties. Slick.

Just because every car comes with a lighter doesn't mean that you have to smoke.

hoverboy, Windowblinds shows in display properties even if people haven't installed WB? Is this what you meen? If it's the case... Wow!! Stardock, prepare to make lots of money... Whew... This site will indeed be very popyular very shortly...
Or maybe I misunderstood what you meant...
But, other than that, Fa65 has a point. It's unfair competition to add MSN messenger already preinstalled, unless at the install you give the choice if people wish to install MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, or whichever. Microsoft just spent 3 years in court for integrating IE in Windows, and now they just ignore that and do the same thing all over again.

paxx - the last time that I installed WindowBlinds XP, the skins were available via display properties, but no, they're not there prior ... as for the other, you can currently choose from Hotmail, MSN Mail, or Outlook Express to show up as a quick-link at the top of your start menu to access your email. I read that, through use of the API's, other software (Eudora, Lotus, AOL, Yahoo, ICQ...) can put themselves in those lists also. Since I'm not familiar with this level of programming, I'm not sure if this is possible/true, but in a past article at AnandTech.com this was mentioned.

If you put WinXP and Win2k in a jar together and shook them up, WinXP would be in a world of hurt.
Well, the fact is, that as everybody has seen, normal end users, moms, and many other ppl who dont give a shit will turn all this stuff on because is easier, faster, and also the OS is all the time telling you is cool... they dont know nothing and just act... off course this is monopoly... And WinXP is a tweaked Windows 2000, i think Windows 2000 is better, off course Me sucks, it still use the Win95 kernel, many user opinions here and on other forums said one of the coolest things was all that email and im integration, many of them are standard ICQ users... im sure that when XP is realased MSN IM users will start to gorw quickly, while ICQ stay the same or even decrease, now please read this carefully, im NOT saying WinXP kernel/new APIs/ui/speed sucks, i just say their way to play monopoly sucks... What is going to do MS when it has all that power? after all this .NET deals with eBay and Visa? you can see since long MS dont care about consumers, like with Windows Media Player 8, they first said it only could run on XP, said it only was going to be realased for XP, and later some reverse enginners/crackers grab it from XP and said "Wow!", it runs on Win2k, even on ME, so is clear MS was telling lies, they only want you to buy XP and pay every year... I wont like if that kind of play monopoly is used on my Visa card... really wont like it... thats why i say XP, and MS sucks... commeon!!!, i dont remember wich one was, if ford or chrysler, but some years ago one of those was divided by the US governmet because it was a monopoly, no kidding now US gov is weaker and like to help big companys... arrrgh... they should have stoped MS long ago, but off course they can claim illegal your right to learn, to speak, and for the ones that dont know what im talking about, is about CSS encryptment. hell. where is this going to end?
