Why are only bitmap zips allowed?

Versions of Windows from 98 and up include the option to view your desktop as a web page, thus enabling jpgs and gifs to be used as backgrounds. Why do we have to convert wallpaper files to bitmaps? I think we should have the option to just upload a jpg or gif file. Most graphic programs these days allow for easy file conversions. Plus, web formats take up less space on your hard drive.

It just says bitmap zip for a guideline, I believe. I've uploaded many zips with jpegs in them (like you to save on the download/file size) and it's worked with no problems

Interesting. Thanks. I believe there is supposed to be a link to a FAQ page. It says something like "If you're uploading files for the first time, read this" but there's no working hyperlink.

Hum, BMP is just one of the bitmap formats. JPG and GIF are also bitmap formats, as opposed to AI or EPS files which are vectorial formats.

there are alot of .jpg wallpapers on here, not just zipped up bmp's ... so we technically speaking dont "have to convert wallpaper files to bitmaps". (i think)
