Major Geeks - A great site for finding software

http://www.majorgeeks.com/

Hi ya folks

There probably is not one of us in the community that hasn't on a regular basis gone looking for a piece of software that performs a specific function or one that will make our desktop look better or be more functional.  One site that I have found that I can usually find what I am looking for is Major Geeks.  It is full of both free, shareware and commercial software.  A short review is provided for each selection.  http://www.majorgeeks.com/

The site is set up so that you can easily find what you are looking for.  Down the left hand side are categories that make you searching very easy.  Down the right hand site are links to information pages.  If you are fairly new to computing or just want to make your computer safer, cleaner or more productive check out 'Top Freeware Picks'  The site has sections for picks of the day, site news and one that I always check out 'Way Off Base', all updated daily.  They can also be found on FaceBook and Twitter.

If you are looking for that one piece of software give Major Geeks a look, you just might find it there.

If you have found other sites that are similar post a link.

Just make sure you do the research on the software you plan to install.... and if you can try it on a 'virtual machine' so much the better. It's a good site, Philly. There are many on the net.

Also, check the software offered, and if it works without "tool bars" which frequently come on "free" software.

It makes no difference which site you go to looking for software.  You always need to know the software and always check it out first.  Over time I have found that when installing anything on the computer don't just click to get to the next page, read before clicking.  It will save you from asking 'Where did that come from'.    :sun:

I keep the link to Major Geeks right next to my link to WinCustomize on my bookmarks toolbar. I even bought a cap through them. It has the Major Geeks logo on it and it is olive.

Yup. majorgeeks is a site I've visited many, many times over the years, and I've rarely been disappointed or have regretted my choices there.  They 'road' test the hosted software and it is checked thoroughly for spyware and other nasties, so it is reliable and safe to use.

I frequently check out the 'Off Base' section where useful software and hardware reviews can be found.  Quite a few major contributors in the PC world are featured there and the news is always informative.

As for the 'Way Off Base' section, well I've learned a lot about Florida and its inhabitants from the regularly featured "Florida Friday".  At least now I better understand when I watch CSI Miami, though I doubt that I'll ever understand that Miami Vice...

Crockett and Tubbs were a little on the strange side for me... and the movie remake was even more confusing. :S :-"

I've found the larger software developers are often the culprits who add other developers toolbars and the like... well more-so than the smaller developers featured on majorgeeks.  The thing with majorgeeks is that they tell you if the software comes with any add-ons or caveats, so usually you are well informed prior to installing anything.

What I'm getting to despise a lot lately is how many developers (Alwil comes to mind immediately here) have included Google toolbars and other products in their installers.  While many warn you and provide opt outs, some do not, and that pisses me off severely... so much so that I wrote to one such dev and included a few expletives to show my disgust, plus my feelings toward Google.  Again, it's usually larger developers who include Google crap... well the ones who have sold out to evil, that is.

Oh look, I've had another rant about Google.  Doesn't take much to get me started, do it? :w00t:

Good onya, Philly. :thumbsup: :sun: :)

major geeks is a good one, but i find that filehippo in my opinion is better, they also have their own update checker that checks the sfotware on your computer and lets you know if they have updated versions available. Great place for free, shareware and commercial trials.  www.filehippo.com

There are probably quite a few good ones out there. Having links to them is a good thing I thing .... think .... cnet too has a lot to offer. I use them regularly and get frequent updates from them. One app they push is a version tracker, not the name though, it keeps an eye on what you have and alerts you to updates as they are received. Good choices all. I added them to my speed dial. lol

Agreed Philly0381, it's a good site.

Some of my favourites:

Gizmos Freeware & Reviews (Email alert available);

http://www.techsupportalert.com/

The reviews are excellent and compare different free products.

The Windows Club (of course);

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/category/downloads

Always something useful here. Not just software but also interesting information (Geeky).

Donationcoder;

http://www.donationcoder.com/

I've been going here for some years. Interesting applications. They have an annual NANY (New Apps for the New Year) competition. Some different tools & time wasters.

Giveaway of the Day (Email alert available);

The email notification is a excellent way of being informed. I've missed a couple of good & useful (to me) programs in the past. I look at the email and, if interesting, I will go and have a look, if not delete it.
