Suggestions and Modders Needed!

A massive new mod is afoot.

I have decided that we need a defense/engine mod. The objective is to give the ship defenses and engines the same variety between races that the ship weapons have. I need suggestions for technologies that might be used by various races. I also need modelers to create some new ship parts to go along with these concepts. I have milkshape but I'm not very good with it. I believe the first step is to reduce the stupidly large engine sizes of TA 2.03 to what they were before.

I have a few suggestions:

Arceans: I think they should stay without better engines (or only up to ion drive, if you feel really sorry for them.) But giving a +1 speed bonus to Advanced Navigation Centers might not be a bad idea.

Iconians: Improved armor defenses (inspired by the Arnorian Battle Armor tech)

Yor: The Hand of Zarquon's Yor Mod had it so that the Yor had fewer engine techs, with an additional Stellar Steam tech to compensate. Maybe you could do something similar.

That's all for now. I'll add more as I think of it.

I was thinking of giving the Arceans a few levels of Solar Sails which would be large and slow but cheap. Then they get up to hyperdrive, ion drive and impulse but no warp drive.

The Yor can have stellar stream drives that no other race gets because they can't stand the conditions inside the streams.

I intend to have an Ion Drive II between Ion Drive and Impulse Drive. Also the Ion Drive tech will give Speed +10 like Impulse Drive does.

As far as the speed bonus, I have a custom race that will have few engine or logistics techs but a one per planet improvement that gives +1 logistics and +1 speed (remember +10 speed is needed to add a movement point). It can later be upgraded to give +2 logistics and +2 speed.

A side note on the speeds in this game: If the pc/wk figures are to be believed, let us remember that 1 parsec/week=3.26 light years/week=170 ly/yr=170 c. In Star Trek TNG terms, this is Warp 4.67 for the SLOWEST ships in this game. If we go faster, we have this:

Speed (pc/wk) Lightspeed Warp Factor
1 170 4.67
2 340 5.75
3 510 6.49
4 680 7.08
5 850 7.57
6 1020 7.99
7 1190 8.37
8 1360 8.71
9 1530 9.04
10 1700 9.37
11 1870 9.57
12 2040 9.69
13 2210 9.78
14 2380 9.83
15 2550 9.87
16 2720 9.9
17 2890 9.92
18 3060 9.94
19 3230 9.95
20 3400 9.96

Any modelers or texturers reading this: please take a look at the Metroid Mod I am doing. There are an incredible number of weapons and defenses I need modeled that I am completely unable to create for myself.

Just curious...

What warp factor would a speed of 200 be?

Interesting idea here.

I think the Iconians and Thalans should both have extra-powerful but more expensive defenses. The backstory reasons would be different, but the same components probably would work for both.

Terrans should have a special type of shields, since canonically they were the first race to develop them.

Or, they should get the shield technologies with less research time than others. Perhaps they should get a ship-sized version of the Arnorian planet shield in the end. I think Iconians and Thalans should have different techs though, with the Iconian defenses referring to Precursor technology and Thalan defenses referring to extra dimensions.

Also, 200 pc/wk would be Warp 9.99999573. The formula is (lightspeed)^0.3 before Warp 9 and 10-(1516/lightspeed)^3.9751575164772 after Warp 9. Warp 9 is 1516 times lightspeed on both formulas, and the second formula produces 1909c for Warp 9.6 (which was the maximum speed of one ship in Star Trek) and an infinite value for Warp 10.

End of quote

I felt the Iconians and Thalans should have the same actual components with different flavor text in the tech description. Seems simpler, and the components would be pretty similiar anyway, at least in my view: the current Iconian and Thalan tech trees both have a "few but powerful" theme, and I'd have something similiar here.

The Terrans probably shouldn't get any techs to do with the Arnorian planetary shield, because it's Arnorian. They didn't invent it and they didn't have a clue how it worked in the campaign.

The Arceans and Drengin could possibly have a similiar set of defenses, reflecting that they were the only races to have fought an interstellar war before the hyperdrive era.

The Torians could have weaker defenses, but with more passive bonuses (this is already slightly the case). It reflects both that they're new to advanced technology, and that, as an aquatic species, they have a natural edge at 3-dimensional movement most others don't. As long as there's no "evasion" feature in the game, I prefer to reflect things like this with passive bonuses to weapons and defense.

Sounds good. I was also thinking of having a custom race get crap ship parts but then get crazy weapon/defense bonuses to make up for it. I wonder if any stock race should work this way?

I had heard that only super projects, galactic achievements, and trade goods could give a civ-wide bonus, so I am interested in knowing if this improvement works, and if so, how you did it.

I think one per planet buildings can. I'll have to look into this more. If this limitation is present then it is a bug in need of fixing.

Hello, again! I just did some tests, and normal improvements, even 1/planet, simply cannot give civ-wide bonuses. As I said, only galactic achievements, super projects, and trade goods can. It is a serious bug, but it does not look like it will ever get fixed.

I see some great ideas here and especially love the idea of a SpaceStream Drive that only the Yor can Handle. Arcean space sails are even better. I have no idea how modeling works, but here is a picture that might help w/ the appearence of the sails.
