Dragging files onto Applications NOT possible

Day 1 was me fully customizing the objectdock layout to my pleasing. That went effortlessly.

 

So today i actually started using the dock. There are a few issues here and there but nothing really bothersome, except one.

 

It seems that object does not allow to drop files onto an application so that the application, let's say photoshop launches and imports the image.

This is also very annoying because you can't even drop files onto running applications.

I don't use my taskbar anymore, that is the whole reason I bought objectdock. Now it's a real pain to drag photographs from my desktop to photoshop if it's minimized. I constantly need to resize photoshop and move it everywhere so i am able to pick up the file and drop into the application itself.

 

I think this is one of the most important features stardock needs to implement in the very near future.

Why don't you just right click and choose "open in Photoshop"?  Is 2 clicks really too much for you?

It's generally a very practical function for any dock.

Ah, I feel your pain. I have a burning app that I like to have three going at one time so I click the dock icon and it launches then I click it again and it goes to the one already open instead of opening another instance of the app so I wind up going to my desktop shortcut and clicking two separate times to launch the additional two that I need. And yes, I am able to burn onto 3 DVD or CD's at the same time just not the same data! I would like to see that function improved.

Hold shift and click the icon, a new copy will open. It is essentially the same behavior as an icon pinned to the windows 7 taskbar.

Sorry but this behavior has been removed from ObjectDock. The reason for this is that dragging files on to applications is, in our opinion, too ambiguous of an action ; it is impossible to tell if the user wants to drop the icon onto the dock to add a new icon, or to drag it onto that specific application. To place emphasis on the program being a launcher the choice was made to make it easier to add shortcuts rather than to provide a feature only a smaller population of dock users will get good use out of.

If you need to drag a file into a minimized/hidden running application, I recommend you use alt-tab while dragging to choose the window you desire, and then perform the drop.

And yup, hold shift while clicking a shortcut to run a 2nd copy, same behavior as Win7's taskbar there, thanks F3N1X85

Not being a smart ass.  I'm quite serious.  I find it insane that you even took the time to post about something like this.  You can literally accomplish what you want in 2 clicks, and you are complaining because you want to do it in 1.  That's a new level of lazy.

Next you'll be wanting mind control options to open your start menu with zero clicks.

Sorry, but that's quite the bogus excuse.  It used to work and people didn't seem to be a problem with V1.x where it was complained about regularly in the forums.  If I dragged a .log file onto my Notepad icon I knew I wanted Notepad to open, not create a dock item...and if I did want to create a dock item it wasn't that hard to drag a file BETWEEN two dock icons and wait for them to separate so I could drop the new item on the dock.

There are times this feature is useful - too bad after years of waiting for an OD update - it's gone

I used to think I was a productive human being, but the truth seems far from it. After you compared the amount of clicks I want to press to the amount that you think is acceptable, I have realized that I have indeed reached a whole new level of laziness. You have opened up my eyes and I think you should do this with the rest of humanity, because you know, we spend a lot more time behind the computer. God help us if there are more lazy people like me out there who want to run applications with 1 click instead of two. Mankind would be doomed.

Next to that, I find your technique of measuring laziness very intriguing. Do you take any other factors into account besides clicks? You should really inform us about this method. This way we all can go out in the world and inform people, who want to use 1 click to run an application, when they can use two clicks, that they have reached a new level of lazy.

It will never work, when my mind goes blank,( a fairly common occurrence) I'd log off. ;P Not only that, some people are so empty headed, all they would see would be a blue screen.

I wondered why this suddenly broke, was hoping for a bug release that corrected it, and then I saw this. Sigh. This feature was tremendously important to me and my workflow, so much so that I've reverted to 1.x. I never had any trouble with the feature. When I wanted to add an icon, I simply made sure to drop it onto an empty space on the bar rather than on top of another icon. Please return this feature to 2.x! How about at least making it an option!? Global or per bar, doesn't matter, whatever is easiest to implement, but you've taken a fairly substantial feature away from an established user base. Default it to disabled, but put it back for those of us that use it! There is obviously some support at some level for this feature, because dragging onto the recycle bin still worked. In fact, the behavior was quite admirable, popping up a little message that confirmed I was dragging onto the icon and not onto the bar.

I'm surprised this still hasnt been implimented though, ALT+TAB is the only way around this.

RPGFX got the wrong end of the stick: it's more about dragging a file into an open document, than just an alternative to "open with".

But I've given up trying to replace the taskbar. Productivity-wise it is second to none.
(which is one of the many reasons why Windows is far superior to OSX, but that's another argument for another day!)

I'm just happy OD 2 has 64bit support for running indicators!! woohoo! :D
