Hiring for marketing, cause boy do you need it! (exclusive content rant/FUNNY)

Hiring for marketing, cause boy do you need it! (exclusive content rant/FUNNY)

Plenty of other posts about release/bugs/crushed dreams and all the usual. My concern now is your marketing.

I bought my copy, pre-order, through Gamestop. I didn't get beta access like direct preorder. I didn't realize there would be exclusive content at Walmart/Best Buy, as this is usually advertised BEFORE a game is released to build up ANTICIPATION and boost sales, obviously something you did not want to do until some patches were worked out. My major confusion is... This is a 4x game from a company that is well known in the PC community but generally unknown by the 'casual gamer'. If you go into a Walmart and ask the kid beyond the counter any questions... ... here, let's play some word association, k? I will ask the questions and Keanu Reeves will play the part of generic electronics attendant.

-

Q: Know any good games!

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuude! You like playing GUITAR?!?!?

-

Q: Know any good fantasy games?

A: Like FOOOOOOOOOOOOOT-BALL?

Q: No...like medieval, where you can train knights and cast spells?

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuude! God of War you are...ummm, A GOD OF WAR, all kinds of weird creatures and stuff!

-

Q: Know any good strategy games?

A: DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE! Starcraft II is out, you NEED to get!

-

Q: Know any good 4x games?

A: Ahhhhhh, we don't sell adult games really, but in Grand Theft Auto you can bang a hooker!

Q: No, it's a type of game where you explore and research technology, usually takes a long time to play!

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuuude! Starcraft II is out, you NEED to get! Games can take like an hour! (honestly, Starcraft II will be the answer 1/3 questions, I SWEAR, go try it)

Q: I'm thinking more turn based, something that will take me months to play a game... It's by Stardock.

A: IS that the new Star Wars game? It rocks on the WII, you can shake the controller and rip Ewoks in half!

Q: Something more like Civilization.

A: ... That game on DS?

Q: Sorta, i'm looking for the PC/

A: ... P-C?

I'm in marketing, trend research, and I promote there for I am, head my words, dude... Walmart promotes consoles PERIOD and the Uber Geeks at Best Buy are repairing computers, they are NOT on the floor promoting products. The fact that you worked out NOTHING with Gamestop for exclusive content is insane. I would REALLY commend getting a business/marketing/PR consultant in ASAP to help you really focus what you are trying to do. You are making alot of attempts but the unfamiliar with your company just see a buggy product... and your 'devoted fans' see you as, ummmmm, sorta like the Muppet Show, when Kermit the frog would get frazzled and would run around screaming with his arms flailing in the air. It is amusing us but eventually Kermit would calm down and things worked our. Or a bomb blew up the theater. Anxious to see which plays out for you guys!

I'm  a bit of non-consoler.  After playing several ports to the PC, I've come up with my with a rather strange analogy.

It's like looking at Lamborghini or Porsche or muscle car.  It looks sleek, has impressive lines.  The outer appearance advertises it's a sports car with power, acceleration, speed, and handling.  Yet you open up the engine compartment and you find a 2 cycle lawnmower engine in it.

Every port or cross-platform I've played just yells, "Designed with severe hardware limitations."  I find them semi-enjoyable at best or a major disappointment.  Though if a game has a decent story, I can often still get some enjoyment out of it.

Also, whom ever places in random button pressing during cutscenes needs their head examined.  I watch cutscenes for the cinematic esperience.  Suddenly placing commands to pressing to buttons quickly is enjoyable how?  That's like telling me to press a bunch of buttons on a foreign remote while trying to watch a movie.  WTF?  How is pressing two buttons quickly during a movie sequence supposed to be ehjoyable?  Either let me play the game or watch the movie please.

I always envisioned we would slowly evolve into a soft-core porn provider. That seems to be pretty mainstream.

Starporn?
End of Tiberonmagnus's quote

It would have to be a slwo change, after each new generation of good games, they could change one letter at time..

Stardock , Stardocn , Stardorn , Stardron , Starpron

easy as pie, no one will see it ''cuming''.. hahahahah

I hate consoles so much that when I bought a Wii for my little brother, I had to put it in an empty PC case just to hide my shame.

On the topic of soft-core porn, the consoles are already designed to be forwards compatible with that engineering path.

I will demonstrate:

XBOX becomes SexBOX.

XBOX 360 becomes SexBOX 69.

Playstation becomes Gaystation.

Dreamcast becomes Reamcast.

Gamecube becomes the main rival of Gaystation, as Gaycube.

Wii doesn't need to change a thing, although it does get released in a Special Gold Edition.

Nintendo 64 becomes Inuendo 69.

Sega Saturn becomes Sega Uranus.

Sega Genesis becomes Sega Genitals.

Sega Master System becomes Sega Masturbator System. You don't want to know about the accessories.

The list goes on, but it's scary to know how long they've been thinking about this. So, I'm afraid you're a little late to be jumping on to this porn wagon Brad.  :(

Honestly pc games are most commonly sold at walmart and bestbuy.  For marketing they should go for a viral marketing plan on youtube or something of the like.  Or simply hitting up all the game websites and make themselves known.

I find it hard to believe the people who would play a little app game on their phone would ever buy a full TBS pc game, sounds like the faulty

I think amazon has the PC market beat. I can't even remember the last time I actually bought a game in a physical store. There used to be a large comp USA store nearby that pretty much covered everything computer wise, but it closed like 10 years ago. I pretty much buy all PC games or other apps now through amazon. The only PC game I can think of that I wasn't able to get on amazon that I wanted was distant worlds, probably because it was a New Zealand outfit, I just ended up getting the download version direct from them.

Yep that is where I go first, Amazon. I don't care what other people's experiences are with Gamestop, we have two of them in the local mall (one is actually still labeled EB Games), they both have the same titles (easily checked via inventory online), and similar CS which is, poor for my experience. I make no claims about other GS stores. Amazon, I order what I want and the selection is HUGE, and by god it actually shows up without some individual asking me if I am sure, really, really sure I want this game becaues they heard it sucks.

I went to Gamestop to get this game, and they told me they never heard of it, then looked it up and said it hadn't been released yet.  I then went home and bought it off of Impulse.

That could be good, holding off until 1.1

Ever since Gamestop bought EB the PC section went downhill.

But let me get straight to a crazy story from ~3 years ago. I walk into gamestop as I am prone to do. I go straight to the PC section to check for games that recently dropped in price. Then I see a sign. "Buy 1, get 1 free (equal or lesser value)". Maybe I just don't get out much, but that was the only time in my life I have seen video games of any kind at buy 1, get 1 free. I don't remember exactly but I am pretty sure you could even get brand new $50 games with this deal. I only bought 2 games for $20, but that was crazy. I felt for sure that they were cleaning out inventory to remove PC games entirely but I guess it was a one time thing. Anyways... buy 1 get 1 free... thats a great way to move merchandise (marketing 101)

In Aussie land here, and the situation is not much better. I went to GAME, the main competitor to EB and pre-ordered Elemental. I was told the release date was Aug 19 (which I knew was BS as the U.S release date was Aug 24). When I went to call them on it, they told me it had been pushed back to the 'I don't know what' of September. I then purchased the LE from Impulse which is not available here. Just out of curiosity, I waited until about October 5th to see if I'd hear from them, which not surprisingly I did not. So I had my $10 downpayment converted to store credit. I did not see a single copy of Elemental in what little PC section they had.

Now this thread is, well, a wonderful read.  You all had me in stitches... and now the thread has come undone.  LOL.   BTW, what is soft porn?   I thought it had to be 'hard?'  Did i miss something by NOT going to PR school?

Soft porn has porn where they don't actually have sex, they just dry hump and show boobies.  Like late night Cinemax.

Ok so shoot me for mentioning this, but maybe SD should look into the 3DS for a port ? Its supposedly more powerful and i love to play TBS strategy games on my DSXL when i am traveling.

The touch screen gives the DS a very mouse like interface akin to the PC so there are lots of ways to get PC control conventions across to the DS.

Course no one is really sure how powerful the 3DS is but wow it would be fantastic to play a version of elemental on a hand held.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned a 3DO system, man i loved mine when i had it, was so robust to what was out at the current time. Anyone see the new panasonic hand held thats supposed to play MMOs ? Looks a bit underwhelming.
