Hiring for marketing, cause boy do you need it! (exclusive content rant/FUNNY)

Plenty of other posts about release/bugs/crushed dreams and all the usual. My concern now is your marketing.

I bought my copy, pre-order, through Gamestop. I didn't get beta access like direct preorder. I didn't realize there would be exclusive content at Walmart/Best Buy, as this is usually advertised BEFORE a game is released to build up ANTICIPATION and boost sales, obviously something you did not want to do until some patches were worked out. My major confusion is... This is a 4x game from a company that is well known in the PC community but generally unknown by the 'casual gamer'. If you go into a Walmart and ask the kid beyond the counter any questions... ... here, let's play some word association, k? I will ask the questions and Keanu Reeves will play the part of generic electronics attendant.

Q: Know any good games!

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuude! You like playing GUITAR?!?!?

-

Q: Know any good fantasy games?

A: Like FOOOOOOOOOOOOOT-BALL?

Q: No...like medieval, where you can train knights and cast spells?

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuude! God of War you are...ummm, A GOD OF WAR, all kinds of weird creatures and stuff!

-

Q: Know any good strategy games?

A: DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE! Starcraft II is out, you NEED to get!

-

Q: Know any good 4x games?

A: Ahhhhhh, we don't sell adult games really, but in Grand Theft Auto you can bang a hooker!

Q: No, it's a type of game where you explore and research technology, usually takes a long time to play!

A: Duuuuuuuuuuuuuude! Starcraft II is out, you NEED to get! Games can take like an hour! (honestly, Starcraft II will be the answer 1/3 questions, I SWEAR, go try it)

Q: I'm thinking more turn based, something that will take me months to play a game... It's by Stardock.

A: IS that the new Star Wars game? It rocks on the WII, you can shake the controller and rip Ewoks in half!

Q: Something more like Civilization.

A: ... That game on DS?

Q: Sorta, i'm looking for the PC/

A: ... P-C?

---

I'm in marketing, trend research, and I promote there for I am, head my words, dude... Walmart promotes consoles PERIOD and the Uber Geeks at Best Buy are repairing computers, they are NOT on the floor promoting products. The fact that you worked out NOTHING with Gamestop for exclusive content is insane. I would REALLY commend getting a business/marketing/PR consultant in ASAP to help you really focus what you are trying to do. You are making alot of attempts but the unfamiliar with your company just see a buggy product... and your 'devoted fans' see you as, ummmmm, sorta like the Muppet Show, when Kermit the frog would get frazzled and would run around screaming with his arms flailing in the air. It is amusing us but eventually Kermit would calm down and things worked our. Or a bomb blew up the theater. Anxious to see which plays out for you guys!

j/k... I like your style.  Stardock would benefit from that attitude so I wish you the best.  Kermit is an apt analogy.  The initial reviews, or lack thereof, and instabilities I imagine threw a wrench in the marketing, so where to go from here once the game settles, hopefully with 1.1, is anyone's guess.  I still think hot female battle gear wouldn't hurt.

You know, there's something to be said for sitting back on the couch with some beer and chips on the coffee table and playing games that way.  Funny thing is, shooters are MISERABLE with the dual stick controllers, after you've played a couple with the mouse and keyboard, but that is most of what there is.  But turn-based strategy can be handled just fine with the standard controllers and you barely see any of those on consoles.  Slow RTSs like Sins would probably do just fine on a console with a little creativity in the control design.  Please, just don't make XBox exclusives or I'll finally have to break down and go buy one.

Well, you could have real sword fighting in the tactical battles with that console that has the 2 stick controllers you flail around.
(I keep forgetting which is which but it's one that is shown in TV commercials a fair bit)

Your post made me smile OP, and yet at the same time very sad. I gave up a long time ago expecting assistance or even knowledge about games that interest me, that includes games on console by the way. I avoid Gamestop fairly heavily too.

I agree on console turn based lacking in titles, very untapped market...but look how well tactical battle games do, at least on Playstation systems...

Ok, i'll give you one idea for free (you don't even wanna hear what I charge for consulting *grin*). Create an APP for Iphone/Droid that is a dumbed down version of the tactical combat engine in Elemental where people can battle each other...you can transfer your ACTUAL army from your ingame (some kind of 'point' system to limit abuse of over-powered-ness). You can enter a 'world battlefield' which is a general match making system, or you can search for close by kingdoms (the app can do a gps/radius search for people within X miles to do battle with...HUGE hit at cons). LINK together some kind of content/achievement for owning both... NOW... Offer a free 3 battle trial, offer full free versions to frequent forum posters (as they like to talk) and people in the 'industry'. Sell it for something simple like $3...as you are not planning to 'make money' but to promote the FULL game. ... Design the engine with the same flexibility as you did with your other games, and you can use this same tactic on pretty much any release. ... I mean, hell, you could do a GalCiv app now, people go nuts, be like Spaceward Ho (which I play on my palm STILL).  ...

Do you work for gamestop?  The closest gamestop to me has two types of workers, and of those they are console obsessed fps and the ones who love action adventure.  I didn't realize gamestop still even sold pc games.

Honestly pc games are most commonly sold at walmart and bestbuy.  For marketing they should go for a viral marketing plan on youtube or something of the like.  Or simply hitting up all the game websites and make themselves known.

I find it hard to believe the people who would play a little app game on their phone would ever buy a full TBS pc game, sounds like the faulty ideas most other games such as SPORE used to try and bring people back, it failed miserably.  Offering new content and expansions worked better.  Also  "offer a free 3 battle trial .... offer it for something simple like $3"  That is just absurd.

Your ideas sound astonishingly similar to the fads that are happening right now, and I do not think they work very well for me or any of my gamer friends.  Stay away from cross platform crap it's disgusting, and turns people off unless they are all done perfectly.

The biggest problem is the market, tbs is niche market.  And some of the early market was burned with the release, they need to bring them back and get the word out.  I didn't hear about this game through normal methods, I actually found out about through a game modding circle.

Best buy does not have any uber geeks, and all they do is promote products.  You cant walk into a best buy store without 3 workers trying to sell you the newest game / tv / phone.  I feel sorry for anyone who goes to best buy to get something repaired, they are nothing more than highschool kids and business students.  I have had to fix many computers that were "repaired" by the "geek squad".

Nope, never worked for them actually. It's hard to generalize all workers in all stores around the world, but generally a 'gamestop employee' is going to have a much wider game knowledge then a 'walmart general electronics employee'. The fact you don't even know what Gamestop sells confuses me on why you would comment so aggressively... It's like saying "I've never had vanilla pudding, but I know chocolate is the best." Learn all the variables, then come to a conclusion.

Would like to know sources on that. Are you going by number or ratio? If 100 people walk into a gamestop and 20 of them buy a PC game, that's 20%. If 1000 people walked into the electronics department at walmart and 50 bought PC games, yes it's a bigger number, but only 5%. I do agree viral marketing on youtube or other such medias is very great, but the problem I for see is every browser game out there is doing it and most of them advertise as 4x style games, if Elemental got grouped with those it would actually hurt the image of the complexity of the game.

I can not think of the title right now...but it was a game that had so many sales (tens of thousands) it crashed the servers cause they only expected their 'little app' to have a handful of downloads. Think I read on Giz, dunno. Every day my friends, all tech guys who would play this type of game, show me their new apps. Heck, they got a pacman app with GPS that when you go into McDonald's it acts as a 'power pellet' (cracks me up). Ummmmmm, Spore sold over a million copies NOT counting apps, dlc, etc... I wish I failed miserably like that! Look into EA apps, they do very well and offer cross promotion content.

Google and eBay were once 'fads', remember? Heck the internet was once a 'fad'. As you are already HERE, you don't need to be sold obviously. My main point in the post was why is Stardock catering to Walmart/Best Buy but not to the largest GAMING store out there? As per my previous ratios, i'd rather have a few hundreds targeted consumers then thousands of random. As for cross platform...yea, it usually is disgusting, that is why most avoid, but some people just don't do computer games, so why neglect an entire buying market out there if there is something that could cost effectively be achieved?

Big titles and console is mostly the same. Even with Civ 5 out, I didn't see a SINGLE cut out/sign/nothing past game on shelf, and I have 11 Walmarts within an hour of me. Sims 3 had a big boost but EA/Walmart have a good standing relationship. Best Buy does promote PC games abit cause they are trying to expand their computer sales/service, but it's mostly big companies again. Stardock, while awesome, isn't a household name...yet. I'd like to make it one :).

Never apologize for aggression...and yes, I'm arrogant as hell, but it's all well deserved I assure you. As for 'faulty', that's your opinion and I always say "Don't ask a fat man how to diet." To summarize, if you are gonna elect a mayor and they both gave identical speeches and stood identical on the issues, which would you vote for? ... Ok, now one has 20 years in government with a track record of keeping promises, while the other served 10 years for embezzlement from an orphanage and was just released 6 months ago, before that he sold cars... Focus less on the words, more on the person.

People that know me and who I am don't listen to me...they take notes...and anyone with even minor experience in creative advertising would understand the effectiveness of current marketing trends, which obviously you do not, so...I could go on but I think you understand the sentiment. Not an attack, just simply stating facts. Let's forget you and me in the entire situation... EA, Bethesda, Rockstar and many other companies don't see these ideas as faulty, otherwise they would not use. Simply because your specific demographic does not think they work, does not mean they do not. Again, people in the industry think it works with the figures to match. Can't really argue with the math... Later duuuuuuuuuude!

Heads up Frogboy, this reminds me of the total balls up that was the release of an energy drink out hear in .au, it was called Mother, they promoted the shit out of it for about a month before it came out, hyped it up.. everything was going great until on release day someone had the audacity to actually taste the drink..  for the next 18 months stores where stuck with their original order stock.. most ppl tryed one can, thinking it coudlnt be that bad, but it was..

Sure there was the hard core fans who kept drinking it, but mainly that was because they weren't drinking the 'mainstream' one.. and not because they liked it..

que the almost viral ad that followed on the ''re-release''
If they had of tryed any other path, I doubt I would of gone back to try it, I'm sure you guys could play on this to your advantage if you could add a good enough spin on it, after 1.1 is ironed out. Maybe somkethign like the summoner geeks 'OMG a buggy game that has been fixed, I DONT BELIVE IT' and you could mail out stickers to the stores with shelf stock...
