Build a workshop to get some extra tools. Explore around with your sovereign to get some more on locations called "abandonned crates" or some like that. For gold, exploration works too. Train a pioneer in the first turns and as soon as you discover a gold deposit build a new settlement next to it and a mine on it. That should float your boat
Not even close. I do that, but am only getting like at most 20gp per turn. And I've played a few games, same problem. One gold mine doesn't equal a lot of gold. Or seemingly even 2 or 3. And of course I build a workshop. This isn't about early game, we're talking later game. As well a workshop/labor pit is only one per turn.

You're missing out on quite a few buildings then. I've only played as Kingdoms.. but I had a city with only 2 gold mines that was producing about 80 gold/turn with all the improvements (I built the palace there, as well as a 50% gold prod and 100% gold prod bonus).
For tools/materials.. you can build the workshop in a city that already produces some materials and then build the 20% material bonus building there.
By turn 150+, I'm typically rolling in gold/materials. I can't hire unlimited amounts of troops, but I'll typically have a squad in each of my 15 or so cities, plus a few heroes walking around with a squad or two.. and then my sov with all his summoned units and a few squads.
