Love Elemental? What other games have tickled your fancy?

In a bit of an olive branch to the couple of the truly dedicated adherents of Elemental (not gonna use the 'F' word) that I've tussled with, I'd like to get some insight into what YOU consider to be some great games you've played in the past.

I'm not trying to be a provocateur nor start yet another flame war.  I just want to see if either (a) I'm just approaching this from the wrong direction or (2) we just have completely incompatible gaming experiences to see eye to eye on the current state of the game.

Please try to keep it civil :)

HoMM5 is okay for short play periods, King's bounty the Legend is okay, havent played armored princess. Civ 4 obviously is great. And Gal Civ 2 isn't too bad if you can get past some of the glaring flaws in the design.

I'd highly recommend Dominions 3 The Awakening.  It's a turn-based strategy game - Not nearly as much "polish" as Elemental or Ffh, but super fun.

Ah Wizardry, how I miss ye :(

Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (aka Wizardry I) was the 3rd computer game I ever got way back in 1981.  I still have incredibly fond memories of those line drawn dungeons.

I'll keep it limited to games I can still run without hassles on my PC and I actually play these days.  The list of games I've playED is far too long to publish.  :P

Civ IV:BTS, Civ IV Colonization, Civ IV:BTS with the Fall From Heaven total conversion/mod.

GalCav 2

Wesnoth

Lux Deluxe

Eschalon Book II, Din's Cures (two indie RPGs I got thru Impulse that I otherwise never would have known existed)

Torchlight

WoW

I couldn't get into the last HOMM game but I like the series overall.  I might have to try out dominion3...I've looked into it but couldn't make up my mind.

What I would most like to see in a PC game right now:  A squad-based tactical turn-based game.

Anything along the lines of X-COM, JA, SS, or even the UFO:After-xxx series.

I'm currently playing Pathologic. Anyone who thinks Elemental is bad ought to try that, it's the only game I know that keeps you playing despite the fact it's impossible to enjoy it.

Or try Gods & Generals. I tend to find playing that puts an entirely new perspective on just how bad a game can be.

Torchlight? Eeek...

Im into TB:

Chaos Overlords ---> Best "Oldy but Goldy" out there. (Heard the original creator is trying to remake it, should be interesting no?)

Civs's (all exept 3)

Call to power (aka the "real" civ 3)

(and too bad Sid Myeier sold out and made abominations like "revolution" even civ4 without mods was... "meh" for me but: ROM and ROM:DOW were extremely good)

Jagged Alliance 2 ---> Seriously give it a try! Especially the new mod for the game form bearspit. Best game ever made! Best tac. combat ever made!

Kings Bounty. ---> Best fantasy tac. combat.

Space Ranger 2 ---> Best sandbox in da universe!

Football Manager ---> For me and my friends its not a game, rather a way of life.

Old or new?

New, I have found that King Arthur - The Role-playing Wargame is pretty damn fantastic. The company is VERY small (I think around 5-10 ppl), and similar to Stardock they keep updating and adding content. Just an outstanding game. If they had city building it would give Elemental a knock out. Just a shame that Impulse has no multiplayer or the downloadabul content, so I had to buy in from Steam.

The complete Baldurs Gate series is just untouchabul, I doubt anyone will manage to creat a better roleplaying game than Baldurs Gate II.

Temple of Elemental Evil I also enjoyed a lot, but never finished it.

Evil Genius is a hell of a lot of fun.

Sins of a Solar Empire

Plants vs Zombies

The Witcher

Mass Effect I + II (the story ONLY! I didn't care much for the gameplay but the story kept me going)

Meh, I could keep going and going...too many great games out there.

Heroes of Newerth is a fun game, although there is only 1 map and community is a bit dumb and is entrenched in the position that there can only ever be one map for the game. 5vs5 based on a warcraft3 mod, you level up your character and buy items. Lots of characters to pick from. The game will be 10 times better with new maps (editor isnt out after 3months) but i played the same map for 6 months, so i think it says alot about how fun the core of the game is.

Things I've liked a lot are:

More or less everything from Bioware.
Supreme Commander 2 (With a nagging feeling the original was better)
Empire+Napoleon Total War
Mount&Blade: Warband
Battlestations Midway/Pacific
X3: Terran Conflict
Divinity II - Ego Draconis
Civ IV: BTS
Company of Heroes
Sins of a Solar Empire
King's Bounty: Legend / Armored Princess
Silent Storm
Jagged Alliance
MoM
HoMM 3,5
Borderlands
Grand Theft Auto IV
Trine

.. and probably a lot I can't remember at the moment.

But honestly, I've liked a lot of games that has gotten fairly bad review scores - while they are not all time favourites, I've played through Hard Truck Apocalypse, Spectromancer, Tank Universal, and other indy games that has been very good, despite - at times - glaring flaws. I can look at a game and say 'Hm, that (and that and that) bit could be better' without going 'the whole game sucks donkey somethings' - as long as it brings something new or different to the table. There is so little risk-taking in high-production games that PC games are evolving into a paraphrasing of that old joke: "What kind of games do you play here?" "We play both kinds - shooters and RTS". SC2 is a good example of that - polished so it shines, but the gameplay is identical to the original. A few new units; that's it. And it still sells by the barrel. Played it a couple of days, then played a bit multiplayer, haven't touched it since. If you want anything new or different, there's a few daring developers, the rest is Indy games. And those games are renown for having glaring design flaws... but it's something you will have to put up with if you want to play anything other than A4 RTS/Shooters.

End of Filthgrinder's quote

There's Stronghold building, does that count? And the DLC is on it's way to non-Steam retailers too, the Saxons expansion is on Gamer's Gate now, not sure about Impulse.

Might also want to check their first game Crusader : Thy Will Be Done. It's just battles, no strategy map, but a lot of inter-faction rivalry and tailoring of your army.
