I stayed up late.

I'm relieved that the game is actually fun, if not presentable.

I came home from work last night kinda worn out and didn't really feel like playing, but I felt kinda obligated since I preordered. I have to say that the campaign kept me from going to bed at a reasonable hour! That's a good sign! Judging from the beta I thought the game would be terrible. I still say it's a year away from completion, but it has finally entered into 'fun' territory.

That said there's still a ton of information I'm not getting from the UI. During the campaign I can't research tech or spells, I gather that's part of the campaign but it would be nice to confirm that those buttons aren't just broken. That stupid infocard is still in my way like it was since beta 1. Please make it pop up in a dynamic location when I mouse over something in the lower right corner.

No random maps! What's the holdup here? If you can expose a python API for the map data, I can make a good, balanced map generator when I have time. Once I learn what balance is in this game...

0-day patch drops sometime today which, among an extensive list of other fixes, addresses map randomization and interface. How well it addresses them I guess we'll see, but judging by the interim patch, it will smooth a lot of rough edges.

Personally, I think a year is a little harsh. I get what you mean, but they're most of the way to a good, solid game. As you noted, it's already fun. The exciting thing is they will still be developing it in a year (ish?). Between that and (what promises to be) a thriving modding community, I think a month will yield impressive results.

I'm still glad I got the box. Two words: Cloth Map.

I sat down at my computer around 10:30p last night figuring I'd play for half-an-hour before going to bed.  Next time I looked at the clock it was 12:30a!  I have a love/hate relationship with games that are so good that they make me lose track of the time.

Same here, stayed up way to long. This game is the first game in a long long time where I feel the game mechanics are just right. It might be rough around the edges on the UI, but once you get a hang of it the UI is not all bad. A few patches and this should go from good to great in no time. The game is fun to play at the its current state and thats before the 0 day patch.

Man, I played my first char for 3 hours the first night and 6 hours yesterday, only to die because I wasn't paying attention to the HP of my sov when I was romping through enemy lands. Then I played my second char for another 3 hours only to have the enemy that had romped through everyone show up at my doorstep and wipe out my psuedo well defended city (yes I'd only built one at that time.. was trying something different in terms of food production that I hadn't in the first game). Then played another 4 hours with my latest char and went to bed due to the game crashing when I tried to cast the spell that gives champions magic (imbue something I think). It actually crashed both times I tried it, so I figured I'd wait until day 0 patch was released and hopefully fixes that spell.

Man this game is addicting. Thanks alot Stardock... I mean really... Thanks alot! :)

I only said 6 months from completion myself!

No map gen api for the moment but writing an external map generator is possible, as the maps generated by the map tool are xml files.

The format is not that good however, and some information's a bit murky.

Thanks for the tip Laurent, I already have an external map generator for DF I can use as a starting point. I might be able to cook something up before Civ 5!
