I think were looking at history in the making !

Based on what I've seen as well as played just in beta 3b I honestly believe that when all is said and done, this will be one of the top selling games of all time. This game is such a new and refreshing idea in turn based gaming....some might say that it's like "Civilization" but in the little time I have spent messing with beta 3b I am going to say that this is much better and so much more fun to play !

For all involved I say that perhaps you have created the perfect role play game. And thank you very much for listening to all the good folks who have been kind enough to supply imput as to what they would like in the game. For all who are a part of this project I say THANK YOU !

I really do wish Stardock well with Elemental, but the game won't be a "hit" at the level of a top-selling game for some very important reasons.

Take the Elemental trailer someone linked to up above.  It's been on YouTube for almost two years and only had nine and a half thousand views.  Popular game trailers get that in a day.

Do a search on Google first for Elemental war of magic, and then Starcraft II.  Note the difference in results.  930,000 versus 23 million.  Just an equal comparison, Civilization V returns 12.7 million hits.

Take a quick look at GameSpot top 10 popularity coming soon list.  No Elemental.

There's no buzz.  There's hardly any talk out there.  If this game is going to be one of the top selling games of all time, marketing should've flooded the Net with Elemental talk.

This is a bit of a worry.  Especially since, a new IP needs *more* exposure to get a foothold.

Best regards,
Steven.

Aren't you exaggerating more than a bit with that?

You cannot compare EWoM to SC2 or Civ5. Those games had a huge fanbase already.

Will it be an awesome game? I think so.

Does it have the marketing budget Or the mainstream appeal to be one of the best-sellers? No, i'm pretty confident it doesn't. Unfortunate :( but then one of the reasons i love SD is that they'll happily crank out awesome games despite them not being dumbed-down to suit absolutely everybody.

It has nothing to do with the budget at all. It's the genre of the game. -> TBS. RTS/FPS games are much more popular, but just take a look at Galciv2. It was a very successful game as well, and I think that EWoM will be even more successful because of the powerful modding features.

Read the OP.  He set the scope, not me.  ;)

Except the OP placed the scope as "one of the top selling games of all time".  That means Elemental can be compared on that scale.  Starcraft and Civ are no where near "one of the top selling games of all time", so Elemental has a LONG way to go to reach the scope of what the OP says.

From a "german" perspective I just did a quick search one of the main Civilization community forums in Germany (civforum.de) and found a story* beeing played by a guy who is participating in Elemental beta.

*(You play the game and write about your progress, how the story of your game unfolds, ....)

I do not want to turn this thread off-topic but I thought this could be quite interesting talking about Civ5, sales perspectives or Elemental competing against other strategy titels on the market.

To repeat myself: it's one of the biggest german Civilization community sites. With lot's of fans of TBS genre!! And the game is already discussed a lot and the word is spread amongst the Civ-Fanbase.

Despite the german accent    , here's a short insight about his game (some screenies)

My issues with GalCiv are well known so I won't go into it other than to say that I'd love the opportunity to go back to the drawing board. With GalCiv II, I felt pretty married to some pretty awful game mechanics because people threw a fit whenever we tried to change them.

*chuckle*

Well maybe you shouldn't spend so much time basking in the warm glow of your fanbois ;)

I hope that you can avoid some of the pit falls of GC2, and it does certainly look as though you are taking a slightly different design approach.  AI is once again going to wind up the crucial issue, and I hope you are (and have been) thinking about game mechanics and how they relate to AI all along.  Otherwise we'll be back at that point of throwing in things which the AI cannot handle, which then make certain strategic or tactical aspects of the game broken.

I'm just glad there are still companies who don't aim for the big market, but please the people who actually go for more depth ! I support these all I can, so few games that REALLY get my interest as it might look promising but eventually turns around, going mainstream and pulling the money out of the 'less intelligent' people's pockets by releasing expansion pakcs every month or whatever.

I've been waiting for this kind of TBS game with a lot of depth since Age of Wonders:SM, and that must be almost 10 years now. Sad to see how few people actually enjoy TBS, the genre will never be near any mainstream style of play, and I'm pretty sure Stardock isn't expecting Blizzard-kind of sales, they count on us, the people who love games like this, and we have to show we are here ! I was filled with joy when I discovered Stardock was making the game I was waiting for ! Creating worlds who evolve based factions, dynasties ... I hope this game still hits as big it can and that it could be a foundation of something even bigger B)

Maybe at first a strange comparison, but the film 'Inception' is a great hit, and it's not a film built on a mainstream idea, it requires quite some fantasy and intellect to fully enjoy that film, so who knows this could be a sign ?!
