Stardock Virtual Desktops still not works with 64 bit Windows 7 ?

I just found out in Impulse that a new version of "Stardock Virtual Desktops" (v2.00 2010-03-29) is available. Selecting "More Info" from the context menu brought me to "http://www.impulsedriven.com/products/ESD-SDS-W193", which specifies the _minimum_ requirements "Windows 2000/XP/2003".

So I installed it (no MD5 error this time, an enhancement since the last attempt... ) and tried to activate it by choosing "Stardock Virtual Desktops" from the "Toolbars" menu of the taskbar. But there is no such thing. And yes: I did restart first.

So, should this work? And if not, why does Impulse offer the installation? And why doesn't the product webpage explicitly state that 64 bit Windows 7 is not supported?

"Stardock Virtual Desktops" is a gem, and the main reason that I bought Object Desktop. I don't need eye candy. I need productivity enhancement tools. So please, Stardock, try to fix this.

Thanks!

In general if a utility application does not specifically mention 64 bit support then you should assume it probably does not have it at least if it adds anything to explorer.

Unfortunately Stardock Virtual Desktops does not support any version of 64 bit Windows to the best of my knowledge (XP, Vista or 7)  The product page was almost certainly done before 64 bit OSes were mainstream.

Unfortunately, I do believe this application has been retired.  There are several freeware alternatives and little interest in it as a paid application.

I so wish I had read this before wasting the past 90 minutes trying to install it. I had been using Dexpot, which takes a s...load of configuring but eventually works quite well. Unfortunately it doesn't play well with Fences, restricting it to the 1st desktop. Double clicking on any of the virtual desktops to unhide Fences does nothing, reducing the usefulness of the extra desktops by half.

I've only just gone back to MS as my main OS (Win7 Ultimate X64) after years of being a committed Linux user. Win7 is the best desktop OS produced so far by MS, but why oh why will they never include multiple desktops, a great productivity aid and one of the top 5 attractions (IMO) of Linux.

Shirley, if the application has been discontinued, can you please try and get the appropriate web pages updated? I very nearly bought it without trialling it first, expecting it to run as well as Fences which installed on X64 with no problems.

Or on another tack, if Stardock don't wish to maintain or update Virtual Desktops, it would be good public relations if they were to release the source code under an open source license and let volunteer developers play with it and see what comes of it.

The web pages should be accurate.  Virtual Desktops is still supported on Windows XP and Vista (32 Bit).

This all makes me pretty sad.  My girlfriend wanted windowblinds.  So I just went ahead and bought the whole package.  We bought a new computer that was on clearance and I kinda thought without really looking into it that the programs would be running on 7.  though it is 64bit, i kinda thought thats what wow64 was supposed to be for...I can run games from the early 90's just fine, unlike on vista....   so. The reason I bought everything was to utilize all the programs.  It makes me sad that the responses are along the lines that stardock doesn't plan on doing anything, go google some free things, which isn't a horrific response, but i guess I'll just enjoy dreamscape.  without reading the guide...desktopx is confusing on how to do...anything btw....I've done a lot with talisman from lightek..but it loves to crash on me...so anyways...I won't make a big deal about it.  Consider the extra money a tip for windowblinds.  but as for alternatives litestep is also free, very fun and does a lot!  The reason I wanted the whole package was so I didn't have to deal with it, I'm not 13 anymore, I don't have time. I would have paid more if it would just work.:) but regardless, thanks.

Stardock Virtual Desktop works great in Windows 7 32-bit.

That being said, what would be so hard about fixing it to work with 64-bit?

There is an entire market for Virtual Desktop applications, and Stardock, who came out with the first of them back when they developed for OS/2 just abandons it?  SVD simply works better than anything else I've tried.  I don't want complicated.  I'm not willing to move to a 64-bit version until you support it, that's how much I like this program.

I've looked at others but if they won't play with Fences, what's the point?

Stardock should re-examine support for this product.

totally agree. switched to x64 and half the stuff doesn't work properly. Time schange and soon x64 will be the standard. Best be prepared Stardock.

I heartily agree with the other folks here, SVD is probably the best thing among the Object Desktop apps! I can't imagine how SD came to the conclusion that there was little interest in it. I suspect that if SD polled its clients, they'd find many, many, people bought OD primarily because of SVD. I suppose there might not have been all that much interest in it as a stand-alone, but I'm sure it was a big driver of OD sales.

I just found a superior alternative to SVD: Dexpot http://dexpot.de

The commercial license costs pesky 19 euro, worth every single cent. For private use, it's free!

I agree with dragon13, SVD and CC was the main reason i purchased OD ssoooo long ago. If there is no interest then why is NextStart Winstep thinking about including a VDM   in the next vs of Extreme?? Because Jorge polled his users and thats what we want. Dexpot is ok but it isnt SVD

Support it, advertise it, hype it, Build it and they will come !!!

Finally forced to go 64-bit and still no upgrade to SVD?  Too bad.

Can someone recommend a virtual desktop program that plays nice with Fences and Tiles?

Thanks,

Took a quick look at it.  Looks nice, but I'm after a Virtual Desktop Manager that works with Fences Pro and Tiles.

This is pretty eyecandy, but what I want is something functional like SVD.

Appreciate your suggestion though.

Sorry, I thought he had done a VDM module a year or 2 ago....must have heard wrong.

Tiles for me has replaced Virtual desktops.  It has the option to only show the apps under a specific filter and minimize all others, effective accomplishing the same goal as virtual desktops.

interesting... did not think of that... but it still would be nice to have things like fences work with virtual desktop managers...
