Interesting Desktop supplement - 3DNA Desktop

http://www.3dna.net/
3DNA Desktop is a 3D user interface that enhances and improves the way you work with Windows and the Web. Each 3DNA world offers an immersive and entertaining video-game-like environment to explore and customize. 3DNA is not a replacement for Windows--it works seamlessly with your current setup, while giving you a whole new way to use your computer.

3DNA Desktop allows you to work with your computer the same way you work in the real world. Files are stored in filing cabinets. The stereo contains your favorite media player or file-sharing program. The handy browser bay lets you speed-surf dozens of Web sites by automatically placing thumbnails of your favorite sites in picture frames on the walls for you. You can move and organize all of your programs, documents, and shortcuts exactly the way you want.

Well 3DNA is certainly a great concept, but for me it doesn't quite hit the mark.

While my Athlon 1900+ and GF3 may not be state of the art these days it still runs a little slow for my liking. Also, the graphics and blockiness make it look a tad outdated.

Before you crucify me for me criticism, I do appreciate it is still a beta and that the themes are early experiments.

I will certainly give it another go when it hits 1.0

Nice concept, however, it runs slow on even the latest and greatest power machines.

It has potential, but they have to extremely reduce the system requirements.

sounds and looks alot like this http://www.clockwise3d.com/

Yep, that looks like it's worth checking out - far lower spec requirements and smaller download.

Having checked out Clockwise 3D I find it runs FAR more smoothly even on my laptop.

It is not much different in terms of visual quality too, which is impressive as it does not appear to have been updated since May 2000.

I think 3DNA has a bit of catching up to do, but I really hope they manage it because there is definitely a gap in the market for something like that.

wouldnt bother installing this POS, it is slow as hell and it is a bitch to uninstall, I couldnt even move via the mouse and it doesnt support (or like either) mutiple monitors.

I have a state of the art PC that can run Quake III or Unreal Tournament 2003 at 1600x1200 and fly, yet this desktop crawled.

Finally I have no idea why the uninstaller would take 100% cpu, and take close to 30 minutes to uninstall, but I think it has a problem, a big one.

Dont waste time with this POS, its not worth it, nice idea, shame that it doesnt work.

Update: found out what it didnt like (Windows Explorer and Windows FX)

Once I ran Litestep (No WFX/WinBlinds) it was fine and uninstalled very fast.

Double bleh, wont work with WFX/Windows Blinds then why promote it on this site???

Dont get me wrong, great idea, shame it doesnt work, just so you dont flame me my PC is a Athlon XP 2400, ATI Radeon 9700 with two monitors and 1GB ram, and XP - no crappy desktop by any standards)

so you would think it would work with that, but guess not.

Tallenglish...it's not being 'promoted' on this site, it's merely being drawn to people's attention. Some may find it 'interesting', or maybe 'diverting'.
It's a 'news item', not a 'paid political advertisement'...

this looks a lot more interesting than Win3D, with different themes and games and stuff, but if you can't run it cause it's so slow then why bother. and who would actually use something like that as a desktop?

i found it quite sweet and well running. i have a 2100 xp, 1.2 gig ddr, 80 gig ultra 100 hdd. gf 4 4400. an it smokes. is also on the misses 1600xp, 256 mb,40 gig ultra 100, gf3 500 Ti an it runs smoothly there too. both systems are set up fer gaming an this runs well on them . it has its down falls with the graphics being a lil rough around the edges , i run MechWarrior 4 Vengeance in ultra high graphics mode in 1600x1200 32 bit an it dont have any probs.. u might need to adjust ur graphics cards ta run smoothly

The future is now.....

I would gladly use this but the graphics need to improve and appartnly other issues need to be addressed. I hope it gets better cause it is really a cool idea.

I'll try to do something like that with DesktopX and see if it works..........

what I found it didnt like is windows FX and the fact I run dual display (combination of both made it crawl - including the uninstaller for some bizare reason).

Disable both those and it was fast.

Great idea though, hope they make it better.
