Question to Devs about Elemental Single Player

Recently, in the 'True Face of DRM' thread, it has been said that at some point Frogboy said that all saves would reside on Stardock servers. I don't remember Brad saying this, however, I can imagine at a time(when Demigod was having terrible multiplayer problems) that it might have been included in Brad's rant about how Elemental will have a client/server model and not have problems like Demigod did. It's also possible that it's all a misunderstanding.

So, straight up...will Elemental game saves be local or on Stardock servers?

I am 99.99% certain he was talking about multi-player. For any stardock single player game, you have no need to have internet.

Yes, single player saves are local...though I hear 'saving to the cloud' option is getting popular amongst gamer-types. Back in MY day, saved games required a friggin' BATTERY in the cart, or worse, a 26 character password you had to re-enter :(  Kids r so spoiled nowadays ;)

Saving to the cloud would indeed be a great option, as long as it is that, an option.

Which is the important part. With the current Ubisoft DRM idiocy (can't really call it anything else -_-) I don't think anybody would think it would be a good idea to make it mandatory.

Thanks Boogie. Another reason Stardock is so great - ask a question and recieve a response in less then 30 minutes.

Yes. There are many reasons why someone could not want to save in the cloud (ask some people about their Steam Torchlight game suddenly getting the cloud thing).

There is no scenario where Stardock would want to force users to use our servers since that would cost us extra money. LOL.

What is the status of multiplayer saves - will those be local as well?

Well, in this case I, as one of the people who honestly thought having read Brad state such a thing, apologize for the confusion I might have caused.

I'm glad to read this. I actually also thought about what extra space and cost that would cause, which made me doubt the whole thing, Istar.

I was going to buy the game anyway, though.

According to the beta roadmap, the multiplayer has player hosted and Stardock hosted games. IIRC, the Stardock hosted games will also be saved on Stardock's servers. Presumably if a player is acting as the server, the game would not be saved on Stardock's servers.

BETA 2: Multiplayer Beta

  1. Initial build provides basic multiplayer (player hosted – client/server)
  2. Beta 2A: Persistent stat tracking
  3. Beta 2B: Stardock hosted option.
  4. Beta 2C: Stardock hosted persistent games
