Fences - Icons "fall out" and overlap (Win7 x64)

Fences - Icons "fall out" and overlap (Win7 x64)

I just installed Fences after having some issues where I needed to go into Safe Mode, which reset my resolution and moved my icons all over the place. Having something to restore them is nice.  I'm using Windows 7 x64 Pro with the latest free version of Fences.

However, I'm having problems, specifically with Fallout 3. I run my desktop at 1600x1200, and Fallout 3 in the rather nonstandard resolution of 1280x960 (higher than 1024x768, still smooth, and proper aspect ratio). The Fallout 3 icon is on the upper-right side of the screen in a "Games" fence. Almost every time I've exited the game (with one exception; I don't know why), the Fallout 3 icon has "fallen out" of its fence and moved to the left (where Windows moved it when resizing the screen).  Also, if I have any icons that are near the bottom or right side of the screen that are NOT in Fences, they get moved, sometimes underneath fences.

Before installing Fences, none of the icons jumped around after playing this game.  Right now, it appears that, in attempting to find a solution for an occasional problem, I've created a frequent problem.

1 - Is there a known issue with some icons falling out of a fence after being run? Is there something I can to do fix it on my end, or do I have to wait for an update?

2 - Are there any plans to include basic collision detection to prevent Windows from putting icons behind fences?

I've quickly tried running a couple other full-screen programs that run in resolutions other than 1600x1200, and so far, I haven't seen any problems, but I've only been running Fences for a day.  I have run and exited Fallout 3 quite a few times, and the behavior has been consistent.

I have been having problems with icons falling out since I started using the program. Other than that minor annoyance I love Fences!

I'm using Win 7 x64. I was elated when support was finally added for x64! :)

My problems only seem to happen when I have all my desktop items hidden with Fences double-click (which, unfortunately is most of the time :( ).

When the desktop icons are hidden with Fences, icons fall out of a fence if I do any kind of right-click interaction with them (Properties, Rename etc). Also, the Recycle Bin falls out whenever I empty it. I think it wants to recycle itself!

Also, I have much difficulty re-adding the fallen out icons back into Fences while the desktop is hidden. I have to un-hide the desktop to re-add icons to the fence.

I've done a few tests to make sure I could reproduce the issue and describe it accurately, hope it helps!

I had the exact same problem with icons "falling out" on Win 7 64-bit reboots.

SOLUTION:

  1. Uninstall Fences
  2. Reboot Computer
  3. Download latest Version of Fences
  4. Install Fences
  5. Reboot Computer

CanMan - Did your solution actually fix the problem?

I also have a Dell Inspiron 1720 (just like a previous poster).  :|  Every once in a while, all icons fall out of their fences. It has been happening with increasing regularity lately.

They ALWAYS fall out of the fences when I hibernate the computer. Simple solution - never hibernate. I ALWAYS make sure I completely turn off the laptop before I close the lid.

It has happened 3 times in the past week - last thursday, Sunday, and now last night. I have done no Windows updates in the past week and have not messed with the desktop (wallpaper, screen saver, etc.) in months. I simply turn it off, and then the next time I turn it on, everything's out of the fences. I am getting quite frustrated.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and I have a 64-bit system. Fences claims i have the latest update of the program. I do not have multiple monitors. I am using Avast anti-virus.

I've already put the icons back in their fences this evening or I'd enclose a screen shot. But here's the gist of it. I have several fences. There are no icons inside them. On the desktop outside the fences are all my program icons.

I may try the uninstall/reinstall idea, but if they fall out after that, i must give up. I have too many icons (thus the NEED for fences!), and can't spend this much time reassigning my icons to my fences.

Thanks

Susan

Been using fences for years, but I just removed it from my Win 64 PC. My wife did the same. With Vista and XP, the icons (i call them cows) stayed in their fence. With Win7 they escape theri fence so frequently, it has become unsuable.

I'm not using multiple monitors - so that is not the problem

It's not just game icons - it's any icon I just used - Iy has jumped out of the fence when I sxit the program

I know it is a freebee, but I would be willing to pay for a version that worked

Here's a quote from earlier in this thread.

We've been able to reproduce the single icon fallout issue, and Jeff is working on fixing, but the complete "icons go haywire" issues we have not.  Anyone with the latter issue who can get me a screencast of what is happening please post or PM.

Note the date. This was happening in *2010* and it is *still* happening now!

My problem is that after a new install, the shortcut that is placed on the desktop cannot be dragged into a fence. In fact when you drag, as soon as you drop the icon will shoot back to the space of the desktop that it populated. When I run multiple monitors it will even transverse all monitors to return to its initial position.

When I am having this issue, I have also noticed that when I switch between desktops (shift+click -> Drag) that the screen goes black. The desktop will switch, and the computer operates normally but instead of a smooth sliding of the screen such as on a smart phone...  The screen just turns black until the desktop has switched.

This is not a constant problem but it is frequent.

From reading these posts and from my personal experience it seems to happen after the OS changing resolutions.

I am running on a laptop and when I dock my laptop I stretch the desktop across three 22" MONITORS. It seems as if Fences doesn't handle the constant  screen resolution changes.

Hi,

Everytime I restart windows, my desktop items reset and don't align within the fences!

It's so frustrating - here is a screenshot (i'm half way through the proces of putting them back into the appropriate fences...)

Anyone got any ideas? I'm using my laptop and a second monitor, so i'm not sure whether it's because Fences can't handle 2 monitors / dual display?
