Hmmm, 'moderately angry series of posts'.  I suppose it would depend on the tone and what was said, and a series would seem to indicate a desire to continue making a point, which really isn't necessary.

As far as warning, come on now, most folks know when they have crossed the line in a discussion or conversation, without even having to refer to any rules about conduct in the forums.

My suggestion would be to let your friend and the moderators and admins handle it.

Items such as these are better taken care of by a PM to an Admin or Moderator.  Depending on the reason for banning there may be no warning given as in cases involving spamming.

There is no way of knowing whom you are talking about and as I indicated, this is better handled in a PM (Private Message).

It would help us know why he was banned. Otherwise, this thread serves no purpose, why tell us when we don't know the details?

But yes, best bet is to pm a mod.

Stardock has been more than forgiving up until now for criticizing posts and trolling.  They made it quite clear they were fed up, and said they would start just banning offenders.  I very much doubt your friend brought anything to light that had not been discussed to death already.

and what's 'lose-lose' about banning someone who made "a moderately angry series of posts on the forums"?  sounds win-lose to me...win for us, lose for him!

but yea as was said earlier you should just pm the admins or something. their forums, their rules.

No one has been banned. We do, however, have an access group called visitor that we regularly will set people to who don't use the forums for what they were meant for. Angry rants, for example, is not the type of behavior we're willing to tolerate anymore, especially on the Demigod forums.

But those users aren't banned. They just don't have posting priviledges which is quite a big difference.  Posting on the community forums is not a right. It is not part of ones purchase.

Needless to say, Frogboy's post spells it all out quite clearly. [as it should, as it is he who posts policy by which all the sites' Admins/Mods are obliged to abide].

Typically if someone is being a 'bit of a twit' he/she will lose posting privileges, typically until such time as it is determined appropriate to reverse the action.

If, however there is no indication of a willingness to adhere to appropriate standards of site interaction that reversal may not be forthcoming.

Permanent removal is dependent on a history of such inappropriate behaviour.  Stardock [and her Admins/mods] strives to provide a positive and friendly atmosphere/community for its members.  Sometimes that is a difficult 'ask'....

I suppose the multi-player aspect of the game might engender an unusual amount of strident behavior but due to forum cross posting from one site to another it's not always clear "where" anyone is posting from. If there are different standards on different sites then what standard applies, the site it's posted from or the site the post is read from? I don't think it's unreasonabe to ask how things may vary from one site to another.

Each site in the Stardock community has different demographics.

The Demigod community is somewhat unique is that it attracts a younger demographic that often acts highly entitled. They confuse their purchase of a video game for somehow giving them the right to be insulting and obnoxious to the people running the site or the developers of the game.

At first, we tried to use treat the Demigod community the same as all the other communities (hands off) but it became very apparent very quickly that this was just driving off our target demographic.

For a lot of people (Based on what I read on other forums) Demigod is the game for people who want to play a "Dota-genre" game without the jerks. We are trying to make that be the case.

It isn't unreasonable at all. As FB pointed out a game like Demigod attracts a lot of younger people. Combine that with Demigod's rocky history and you have the potential for a very bad community. As a result SD has to be stricter when it comes to moderation on the Demigod forums.

EDIT:  After posting I decided to at least add something constructive here.  I used to go on the Demigod forums all the time to check things out (I'm currently putting playing Demigod on hold until I get a better internet connection).  The community when I stopped following wasn't too bad.  I could see however, that it was getting there.  Lots of flame posts and way more locked threads than on the SoaSE forum which I also follow.

I think trying to make Demigod a "DotA genre game without the jerks" is a good concept and I'm totally behind that.  Even though I've never played DotA, but have heard all about the community there.

Demigod is owned by Gas Powered Games and not Stardock who is just the Publisher.
