Population Growth revisited

Well, I noticed there were some population growth discussions from about 7 months ago, so I thought we might revisit the question of how population should grow in cities.

At the beginning, apparently most of them will relinquish their rugged life in the country side for a cushier life in a sovereign's empire, but I'm wondering how long into the game immigration remains the primary means of gaining citizens.  This would primarily depend on how long a game turn is and how many turns a game lasts.

It would be interesting if a sovereign had to balance between both ways of gaining citizens mid game (early game benefits immigration, where as late game favors fertility) and perhaps there is even a gap between the point where new immigrants from the country side become properly civilized.  Any ideas?

I always saw immigration working the same way for the whole game, as there would be LOADS of barbarians still wandering the countryside..... however, one thing that might be interesting is immigration depending ion how much uncivilized land there is left near you, as a way to offset the land-grab.....

I assumed people would come there, it wouldn't be like a wide scale immigration.  The immigration would only only be a factor when a city springs to life magically amoungs the dead wastelands of post-cataclysm world.   Its simply a veil to explain why essense can be expanded to create a city, yet the channeler cannot just make people exist.

Ah, I guess that makes sense.  Since you start only as your sovereign.  What I was thinking though, is that there could be different ways to increase population in your cities.  You could build more housing and such to encourage fertility and improve births, or you could build special services that make city life more appealing (which attracts immigrants.)  You might even send out an army to free a slave population from the grasp of evil ogres.

And what's more, where new citizens come from might influence their grade.  Hm... sounds like a topic for a new thread!
