Settings don't change Sim speed?

Settings don't change Sim speed?

Not sure if theis should be in Tech or General, anyway: Ever since I learned about sim-speed, I've been proud that it was usually 6ish all the time.  But an online game today, after 1.1 (which fixed lots of graphics glitches with my 7900GT) showed me there seems to be other problems now:

I was playing a 4v4, and someone said MY sim was low (ha ha I thought), sure enough, it was -2 8C   So I go to options, change everything to medium, check, it's still -2 :annoyed: .  So I go in again, change everyting to low, and it's -1 >:( .  So I had to force my poor fellow players on a somewhat slow/chugging game (which was still kind'a epic).

After the game, I exit, start a solo skirmish, with lowest settings possible (1024x768; Low settings; no AA; no music; no reverb) and it "starts" at 7, but hovers at 1-2 the last half of the game.  So I set everything to max resolution/High settings/high quiality music with reverb/1920x1080, and the sim starts at 6, and hovers at 1-2 the last half of the game.  Just like when I was online, nothing I do seems to change the sim rate now???

Is anyone else having this problem?  It seems fine untill the game gets going a while.  I use to be just sim 3-4 at it's worst.

Dual Core 3800; 2 gigs ram; 7900GT; defraged hard drive; Nothing on taskbar (except Nortorns, which is off, allong with Firewall during all online play). Nortons, Ad-Aware, Marwarebytes all say system is clean.  And I've never been to a torrent site in my life. . .

Tools like the core maximizer increase your framerate/fps but at the same time make the simspeed slower. Thats why it was never recommended to use them in multiplayer games.

I'm sorry but that is just incorrect.  The entire point of the Core Maximizer was to increase Sim Speed.  The tool came with the caveat that it could cause a small hit in FPS but would make long games where Sim Speeds often dipped into the -5 to -8 range in SupCom more playable.  It worked and I used it fairly regularly.  I'm sure the threads for it are still on the SupCom forums if you want to check it out for yourself.

Maybe you should go to the supcom forums and read the thread again... I play supcom since early beta and I read everything whats going on there

Here is a quote from the original post...

What is it's effects and benefits?
Most benefits of the tool begin when normal SupCom would usually use all of a particular CPU core, reaching 100%.
The impact for skirmish play is always beneficial for any multi core or hyperthreaded CPU. Sometimes the benefit is huge, especially late game.
It will lengthen the time you can play before the game eventually slows down (every CPU has a limit).
It makes the game more fluid and responsive, especially when zoomed in.
Sound crackles that were caused by threading issues go away.
It also works around an issue where the game randomly starts up with unusually bad performance (likely due to threading issues).

There is a slight side effect where the sim runs a little slower. This is due to the nature of how GPG's two major threads work together in concert, Sim and Render. Unfortunately the game was not tuned with this kind of thread freedom expected on core 0 and when the render thread is allowed more freedom to the CPU time having huge benefits, the sim code slows down for internal reasons unknown. I only know it's code based. Obviously since most people plays at 0 speed, this slower sim will not show itself noticeable at all until the game is in negative sim numbers. It may reach negative sim numbers a 'little' sooner that is the crux of it. Obviously there is room for some beneficial retuning. Some folks may benefit by using the tool online so a check box option was added to enable while online, by default it won't run while online only because of the potential sim slow down. No definitive answer is given here for online because their are too many variables including hardware, settings, play style, etc. Judge for yourself depending on your settings, hardware and experiences.

But that means the game could work in multiplayer with /nosound right? Could be a decent workaround for now, though I think GPG needs to take a look at this asap, no sound engine should grind the system to a halt, especially not this game where sounds isn't all that prominent, other than some music and announcements.

Sound is quite useful to judge the battlefield, knowing who is attacking, etc. It's quite annoying to play with no sound.

More than annoying to me; I did not know my enemies had Giants till they started clubing me in the head. Did someone die? Keep hitting TAB to see. Guess I'll see what chip upgrade fits a Abit KN9 board.  I'd hate to upgrade if this just ends up getting fixed in 1.2+.  Besides, here's how my computer purchasing luck goes:  Buy any upgrade for my computer and a better, less expensive upgrade is advertised in the paper the next week. . .

The last poatch seems to have changed graphics settings. It might be why simspeeds dropped  abit. Even on 100% lowest settings, I see VFX that didn't appear before. circles of fire, flashes arounds captured flags, etc.

If you happen to have a 7000 series Geforce card, yes, you'd see all sorts of new graphics/effecets.

A 7800 GS, yep. Why? Is this a good or bad thing? I haven't noticed any change in my sim speeds on my end despite the new FX, so.

There was previously an issue with Geforece 7000 series cards where a large number of the effects didn't appear which was fixed in 1.1. While you might not see much difference since yours is at the upper end of that range, those with lower and midrange 7000 cards may need to reduce their settings post-patch to maintain the same speed.

Yes Saber, there were quit a few effects that did not show up pre 1.1, now they do to us 7000 users.  Being able to see the TB's Circle of Fire, and QoT's Bramble Sheild are just a couple important effects to point out.

But Kryo, like stated in the title of the post, changeing/lowering my settings seems to do nothing to maintain speed; only using /nosound.  That's what's puzzleing us.  I now have to play with /nosound & /nomovie just to keep above 0 now.

Processor: 2,4GHz
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Hard drive: 8 GB
Video Card: 128 MB 3D

I have
Processor: dual core 2,2GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM 800MHz
Hard Drive: 200 GB
Video Card: Club3D Radeon HD 3650 1024MB GDDR2

Could someone please tell me whats wrong, please dont speculate, please only say what you know

Thank you very much , Have a great day

Wow, I think your system is better than mine Dennis.  All I can suggest is nothing is working in the background or on the taskbar.  Try using the /nosound and /nomovie settings to see if that changes things, that will at least give you something to compair it to.  It should not be long till 1.2; perhaps that might help things. . .

You have the same CPU as I do, and the same memory, but you have a much better video card (mine's a GeForce 7900 GS).  I can play at 1280 x 1024 with all settings on high and I only drop down to Sim speed 2 near the end of a 4v4 and -2 shortly after start in 5v5 (I don't join 5v5s any more).  Lowering my video settings doesn't help my sim speed.  On a dual core processor, one core is dedicated to rendering and the other handles everything else including sound, and 2.2 Ghz is plenty to handle all the rendering, so lowering graphics settings has no effect.

You should be able to do at least as well as my machine.  Changing the sound settings may have more effect on your sim speed than changing the graphics settings.  Check that you have the latest sound driver.

I was able to gain 1 - 2 in sim speed by switching from Windows XP to Windows 7RC and then upgrading the RealTek AC97 sound driver to a Vista driver.

Yes sound drivers can be an issue with onboard sound. I had 30% cpu power in usage in Vista just playing Winamp. It didn't show in the taskmanager but an advanced tool told me it was the Windows sound driver using that much cpu. I googled it and it said to remove my driver and let Windows install one for me. That resolved the issue and the sound driver of windows now only uses 1-2%.

Your settings will effect the game, but if you really want to raise yer sim speed, you need to change your resolution. Even with low settings, a high resolution can kick the crap out of your system. Change to a lower resolution and your sim speed should raise.

Thanks Void, I'll try a low res game and see if that helps.
