A Fleet of Scouts and Light Carriers?

Sound Strategy or Misuse of Resources?

Recently in a 4v4 game, one of my allies eventually built a second fleet that comprised of nothing but tons of scouts and light carriers. After reading bits on the forums, I would guess that the scouts would function primarily as meat shields for the carriers, and I cannot surmise any other advantage for the combination. It would seem that a player paying any attention at all would simply focus-fire the carriers, ignoring the scouts.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks to any and all who help me understand this combination. Cheers!

I would say this fleet is to counter a LRF fleet.

hopefully the carriers had fighters

if they did, that means his fleet was geared towards anti-long range frigate. Scouts are good agaisnt long range frigates and only long range frigates.

If the opposing fleet was anything besides lrf, though, then I have no idea

Was the guy you were allied with a newbie.  That sounds like something anyone new to the game would do out of desparation.

I doubt desperation, Like Amish and Ive said, if the enemy fleet was mostly LRF this his fleet would of destroyed the other fleet.

Maybe so, but it's still pretty risky.  What if the enemy had a balanced fleet, where his/her LRF fleet was the bait?
