Help with text on tabs - PROBLEM SOLVED

I'm working on a dock (surpise surpise) and am having some problems getting the tabs/text to behave like I want it to.
Here's a 'slice' of the tabs:

How do I control the appearance of the text - as in 'content buffer'?
I've tried just about everything, but no matter what I do nothing changes, from what it looks like in the pic, which looks shaite....
