Fences suggestions

thoughts and ideas

Fences is quite nice and pretty slick, but it needs just a bit more to go from being a novelty to a nice utility.

  1. Fix the multi-monitor support.  Allow utilities like DisplayFusion, etc, to provide different desktops for each monitor.  Have the tool recognize that multiple monitors are present, and show which monitor the fences are on.
  2. Allow different colors for fences
  3. Allow a "default" fence where new icons will automatically go in.
  4. Don't rely on the windows-D (Show Desktop) command to make fences visible.  It's always been a bit annoying -- if you make any windows visible (something you freqently do from the desktop), the second invoke of Show Desktop will no longer restore windows.
  5. In fact, consider making a double-click on the desktop bring up the fences in front of other windows.  My workflow is typically "go to desktop, select something, go back to my work.  You could have an option to auto-hide after opening something, then.
  6. Auto-hide fences after a certain length of time.
  7. Consider a tray icon to represent fences... sometimes it feels uncomfortable adding things to the root menus.

Thanks, again!

Pat.

Multi-monitor is working fine for me on Vista Ultimate 64-bit with UltraMon doing the wallpaper management. Just a data point.

I like pforhan's suggestion of being able to designate a default fence for new items.

im also having problems with multi-monitor settings and fences. i run xp x64 sp2 and use nvidia's nview desktop manager to setup a different background on each of my two monitors. when i enable fences it seems to override the nview settings and copy whatever background is on my primary monitor to my secondary.

Hi, Fences is pretty nice. But it misses a few nice features:

  • Icons ordering if I click on "order by name/order by type" on the desktop, it goes crazy :) Shouldn't it support per-fence ordering?
  • Automatic hiding after a certain amount of time would be great, double click to choose a file, open it and then the desktop wallpaper comes back automatically
  • Automatic grouping using wildcards. Imagine "document fence (*.doc/docx, *.xls/xlsx, *.pdf), folder fence, links fence, to-do fence (files I personally choose) and a RECENT fence (for file downloaded using Firefox, copied via exporer and so on)"

Thanks in advance and keep up the great work! See you
