Installing standard Sins alongside Entrenchment

I have the retail disc , so I decided to install Sins to a new directory in hopes of being able to play either version.

The Porblem I'm having is that when I try to update I'm redirected to impulse where Entrenchment is installed & the new install does not show up so that I may select it for update.

Has anyone managed to make this work & if so how?

If Entrenchment has already been installed, try uninstalling it..

Then, install Sins (fresh) only, update to 1.12..

Make a copy of the folder with your original Sins install.

After that, then install Entrenchment..

IF you need to go back to Sins, just rename/copy the folders back to the original locations. In this way, you can switch back and forth..

I think you need to unclick "show pre-released versions" in your top left menu button. It's a blue button I believe.

If you click on the orb in teh upper left of Impulse then select Preferences then folders you can change teh install directory.

You should install Sins in one directory and then install Entrenchment in another.  You can run each game seperatly by running the exe in each one.

After the beta goes gold you will be able to run one or the other through a launcher.

Erp, are you sure? Because on beta launch day the major issue was that Entrenchment was installing in another folder and was missing some core game files :P

The way I know to do a backup is to install Sins 1.12, copy the folder, and then install Entrenchment. Run Sins 1.12 out of the copied folder, and Entrenchment from the original install.

This is the way that I have done it and it works just fine.  I re-named the copied folder to Sins of a Soalr Empire-Pre.

Once I had this "backed-up" in this manner, then I installed Entrenchment over the original folder.  Everything works like a charm...whether running Entrenchment or running v1.12.  You just need to go into the folder and run the .exe file and not run it from Impulse.

Yeah, I thought Anny's explanation is correct.. Entrenchment needs to be installed on top of existing Sins installations.. The documentation states that Entrenchment will "overwrite" your exisitng SOASE install.. And you can't install the same SW twice on the same PC using Impulse..

Thanks alot everyone for the sugestions. I haven't tried any of them yet but I'm sure I'll get it to work.

Seems like a long away around to make this happen to me when downloadable patches would do the trick.

Anyway...

Mery Christmass everyone & a happy new year.

I've now tried to uninstall Entrenchment & then reinstall Sins.

Now when i try to update I keep getting an eror saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" WTF does this mean?

I've tried to uninstall sins and impulse several times now & keep getting the same result.

I have to say that I'm getting rather frustrated by now trying to get this to work the way it should of in the 1st place. I'm a big fan of the game , however I'm beginning feel that I'm wasting my time.

Please help me resolve this issue as I can't even play updated Sins now.

Read the notice at the top of the page on every single page in every single forum on every single Stardock site.

The server is dead.  They're working on it.

I now see it.

It didn't catch my attention at 1st & without clicking on the "read more" link it's a bit unclear what it's trying to impart to a casual user.

Thanks again for the help.

guess that's fates christmass present .... a broken server <_<

Finally got it to work.

I did a fresh install, patched , coppied & renamed folder , placed S-cut to the exe on desktop & then installed Entrenchment.

Like I said before , It's a big hassle when all we really need is a patch you can download & save.

Has anyone found an easy way to update both installs? I'd hate to have to take the long way around again.

I tried to simply rename the install folders but it still ran entrenchment through Impulse & I've already updated that.

nope, unfortunately that is still the only way that you can update both.  It sucks and takes a nice amount of time...but doubt that they will change any of that until the full release of Entrenchment.

Hi,

I am having a little bit of a problem running 1.12 (now 1.13) and Entrenchment, sorry, but i will try what you are doing to see if it works for me. I have vista 32 home prem, and copied 1.12 over to the d: drive, then upgraded 1.12 to the 1.13, and then Entrenchment Beta 2.

So now c:\...stardockgames\sins of a solar empire\... is up to entrenchment. I launch and Beta 2 comes up no problem, very nice actually, i like the changes, haven't had a chance to see them all , but the ships look like they have been updated, very nice, and some of the "skins" is that what they call them? Very nice!  :)  Anyway, i can run it from c:\... no problem.

Then i go over to the 1.12 folder on d: and fire up sinslauncher.exe and it loads... Entrenchment!  :(  So i shut down, because i think, hmmmm.... vista keeps a lot in memory, maybe its caching and then when i launch its loading what was in there before. So i shut down and restart. Same issue, doesnt matter where i run it from, old copy , new copy, Entrenchment still loads.  How do i figure out what is happening here, and see if i can get the 2 copies to run there respective versions?  Thank you!!!

p.s. there is an impulse.exe in the 1.12 folder, is that launching Entrenchment?  Should i delete it for the 1.12 old copy?

as i have tryed to say and state before hand, that stardoc needs to change its way that entrichment and sins run along side them selfs , i have entrichment installed in another directory appart from sins, but when entichment is installed it moves files from sin to entichment and well sins is left with folders and no sins.

if you uninstall sins the orgiona 1.13 now after entrichment is already installed and working , i find impuse will run orgional sins once or while its still running for that time, next time you restart impulse and run sins again it loads entichemnt, and wont run 1.13 take note of what i am saying thanks.

And they've said before hand that this is for the beta of Entrenchment. The final release will co-exist with vanilla and you'll be able to switch without having to copy folders.

Is it possible to have the original sins v1.00 and entrenchment?

Yes, I know v1.00, why you might ask, first of all I have a big issue with the update of 1.03 in regards to resources and jumping.

Only if you have the disk. Just do the same thing, only install from the disk and make a copy of the folder.

You will need to manually remove the game folder, and delete 2 Registry Keys before you'll be able to re-install.

Go to C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire (or where ever you installed the game) and delete the main folder.

Then launch the System Registry (Start-> run, and type regedit)
Look for and delete the following Keys;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\sins
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\sinsentrench

For Vista 64 bit;
HKLM>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node>Stardock>Drengin.net>sins
HKLM>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node>Stardock>Drengin.net>sinsentrench

Then, reboot your PC and go back to Impulse and try installing the base game. Make sure it installs to 1.13 version, test it out before then installing entrenchment.
