IconPackager v4.1 Release Support Thread

IconPackager v4.1 Release Support Thread

IconPackager v4.1 is releasing today, please post questions or requests for help here.

Known Issues

32-bit - None

64-bit - Vista Only: Uninstall sometimes does not revert the drive icons to the Windows default.  If this happens to you, either reinstall IP4 and apply Windows Default Icons or, work around this issue by deleteing the icon cache (per these instructions) and reboot.

Follow these steps (Method #1) but don't restart explorer.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117229-icon-cache-rebuild.html

In addition, delete all of the files in this folder (before restarting Explorer):

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer>dir

Would anyone be able to advise where I can get hold of an installer for that version please? I update through Impulse but don't think i'm able to check for older versions.email support@stardock.com

They should be able to hook you up

Thanks for the quick reply Zubaz...

I have changed email address since when I registered so I have just contacted Stardock to let them know that.  I included all my original registration details so it shouldn't be a problem.

In the meantime, I copied across the installed files from 4.10.172 from a backup then edited the registry to change the version and everything is sorted for now...working as perfectly well as before I updated.

Mine is messed up to. The icon at the top only says "Packages Fo" so it's all cut off, don't know what it's supposed to be. And if I click on Browse or Language (why would those options be there?) on the bottom right of the browse window, it just closes the whole window. When I click on that cut off Packages Fo button, in attempts to try to browse through all my icons, it doesn't even show my icons. I'm not sure what it's looking for. At the moment, trying to change an icon is a bit useless and futile since the browse doesn't work properly and Impulse couldn't restore the previous archive.

There is a temporary solution

Unistall IconPackager

Install Stardock Central/Install IconPackager

I emailed them and they sent me a 4.1.172.impulse file, which doesn't do me any good since Impulse won't recognize the file as an installer. I replied and hope they'll respond shortly, now that the US holiday weekend is over. Does the Stardock support team have any clue on the status of the devs fixing the release anytime soon? I'd really like to get back to customizing and making my own packages and not just using pre-packaged themes.

PS Downloading StardockCentral from Softpedia and installing IP from there worked.

I've been having an issue lately with Impulse and IP on Vista 64-Bit. It seems that no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall IP through Impulse it always messes up about 90% of the EXE filetype icons. They all become the default icon when rebooting, now I can get the icons to display properly by deleting the IconHandler folder in the registry BUT it seems some installer filetypes become the cmd prompt icon from whatever package I apply, even though some of which should be the default icon for whatever package is applied.

There is a fix though, if I install IP through SDC, reboot and update through Impulse it will work fine. My guess is something is wrong with the full install for IP but updating a current version is fine. I would suggest that anyone having issues with IP give that a try first.

We are looking a permananat solution now.

Until we get a permanant fix, here is a bat file that will unregister the shellext.dll file and should address the issue.

Save the file to your desktop, right click on the ip.bat file and then select Run As Administrator. Once run, the shellext.dll file will be unregistered and a reboot will be required.

I've hit a few problems with IP v4.10.177 running on Vista Ultimate 32.

First, I'm seeing the same dialog box corruption that chiwou82 did. It affects the Change Icon dialog and its file-browsing sub-dialog. You can see what the dialogs are supposed to look like in the manual:

https://www.stardock.com/products/iconpackager/help/IC_1overview.htm#IC_2_2Change_Icon_Dialog

Next, icon installation behaves poorly when I run IP from a standard account. IP requires elevation to an administrator account, and as a side-effect, most of the icons get installed in the administrator account instead of the original standard account. In practice, this means that file-type icons change OK, but special folders/objects (Computer, Recycle Bin, User, Documents, Pictures, etc) do not. It looks like the former are system-wide while the latter are per-user and therefore installed in the wrong place. Live folders also behave strangely: The new icons only seem to appear if I create a new folder or explicitly reset old folders to the new "default." Workaround: Everything seems OK if I temporarily change the user account to administrator level, then restore it to standard after running IP.

Note that this problem may predate IP v4.1, since it sounds like the same problem described here:

https://forums.stardock.com/300418

Next, the drive icon for my Bluray drive is showing the standard Aero icon instead of the IP icons. However, when I right-click on the drive to change the icon in IP, it shows a reasonable icon (DVD) associated with the drive. Therefore, I don't think it's a matter of BD incompatibility, it just looks like Windows is ignoring the icon for some reason. (Related to this, it'd be nice if there were more options for different drive types.)

Finally, Impulse fails to verify the installation if I change the "Repair Shell Icons" options at all. Restoring the options to their original state results in successful verification. (By the way, I've seen similar issues with other products in the OD suite. For example, RightClick verifies OK right after installation, but simply running the program once will cause it to fail future verifies. And DeskScapes won't verify at all for me.)

It doesn't work for me on Win 64-bit either. I get the same error.

A new release of IP went out.  Give that a try.

Still has the same issues for me as the previous one, which I had thoroughly described in the release thread.

are you sure you are running 4.20.x?

I have 4.10.172 now I was running 177 but I down graded to get this to stop. Impulse is only showing ver 4.10.177 as updates. I don't see 4.2.

Never mind I see it. I'm going to update to 4.20.178 and see if I still get this problem.

Okay, Upgrading to 4.20.178 did the trick!! No more funky text on the buttons!!\o/

Any news on the app icons disappearing on Vista 64 ?

HI..

Have just reinstalled Windows Vista.

I'm not trying to update IPv4 to the latest beta build available but Impulse is not finding any updates so i'm stuck with the buggy 4.10.177 for now.  I have 'show prerelease versions' checked in the settings and have tried uninstalling/reinstalling IP a couple of times but the latest build available is always 4.10.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

BTW...i'm using Impulse v3.21.381.1260.  The Impulse log shows the following for the latest update check:

-- [01/05/2009 02:17:19] ----------------------------------------------------
Context: Impulse: WebService: ValidateAccount
Message: (Result: 0 - Success)
Build #: 1260

-- [01/05/2009 02:17:20] ----------------------------------------------------
Context: Updating ApplicationList XML: wc
Message: Updated network xml did not have expected revision (retrieved 88 / expected 89)
Build #: 1260

-- [01/05/2009 02:17:20] ----------------------------------------------------
Context: Updating ApplicationList XML: myoffice
Message: Updated network xml did not have expected revision (retrieved 0 / expected 1)
Build #: 1260

In the meantime, i'm going to try a previous version of Impulse as that may help.

Thanks :)

EDIT: Problem solved...I didn't have BITS running :)

I got the update for iconpackager and the darn thing removed all the icons I down loaded now I have to start all over again :(

WOW WHAT A BIG HUGE PAIN!

NEVER AGAIN THE BUGS ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY AND i DO NOT WANT TO HUNT DOWN ALL THE ICONS ALL OVER AGAIN,

the only icons that i have left after updating is the one allready applyed to the folders and files i changed before the update all the rest are gone.'

sorry just hopping mad ...im done with this waisting my time.

So the new update has the Apply Changes button missing from the options, cant set IP to skin control panel icons..etc.

I had to uninstall IP, reboot, install SDC, install the older IP, reboot, apply the settings then update to the newest IP and reboot once more. This is ridiculous.
