Salvage

for me and everyone too timid too ask

What is salvage, and how does one use it?

I've gotten the impression (from my friends and these forums) that salvage is a way to get rid of ships or buildings that you don't want.

can you salvage destroyed enemies? how can salvage be used with RA?

Salvage is the same as self-destruct. Alt-H is the hotkey; the "caution tape" just below the ship picture in the screen middle bottom is the button. You have a few seconds to reverse the decision if you clicked it accidentally.

All races get a percentage back of the cost of the unit they're salvaging, and they can only salvage units that they own. Vasari upgrades allow them to retrieve a greater percentage of the cost.

Many players start the game by building the capship factory, and then immediately after building a colony capital ship, salvaging the factory to get some resources back for rushing with.

hadn't thought of deleting the cap. ship factory. But if you lose you cap ship, then you have to build a new factory to build a cap ship.

also, by "first cap ship is free" does that mean the first you buy in chronological order, or if you have no other cap ships then you get a free one (like if you cap ship is destroyed, and you have no others, is the new one free too?)

rafi, only the very first cap is free. if you loose all your caps, you still have to pay for the next one.

another note of the vasari tech. in the higher stages, it allows the collection of resources of defeated ships and structures. the way i read it, as your fleet wipes out planets, you get a small income bonus as things die.

Salvaging is an interesting concept and may be fun if done right. What comes to mind is salvaging in homeworld 2. I remember several times playing people who would engage your fleet and then swarm you with salvaging frigates to capture your cap ships.

Personally, I agree that you should never be able to do this when a ship is at half health. I say make it 33% life or less to be able to salvage. Acquiring enemy technology should not be an easy thing to do.

I thought the "Salvage" was what you gleened after battle from destroyed enemies...

Yeah. The only ship able to take another ship in the unmodded game is the Revelation Battlecruiser.
Salvage gives you back apart of ships/structures when you scuttle them. Vasari have some upgrades so they get more back and gain some from destroying enemies.

The earlier posters had it right.
