cap ship exp

how is exp given to a cap ship in a fleet of frigs? does the cap ship get exp if a frig kills the enemy and not the cap? or is the cap ship entitled to all the exp that the fleet kills as it is the only ship that can gain it?

I think it splits if you have multiple cap ships but I'm not sure if it's 50/50 for say..2 ships. If you have 1 cap then it should get all experience for all kills in it's grav well. This is easy to check. Just hover the mouse over your cap ship during any small engagement where you aren't doing any micro and can track who kills what. It may pay to keep the cap far away from the action.

My understanding is that all cap ships in a given grav well will get experience evenly for every third-party ship killed (by any thing).

This can be pretty devilish if you use it right.

If for example you call down pirates on your opponent and peacefully park your cap ship on the edge of his targeted gravwell - your cap will leech experience for every pirate your opponent kills :P

The splitting effect is also correct. If any frigate or capital ship in your 2-capship fleet kills a 50xp siege frigate, your capships get 25xp each; if there are three, they each only get 16.67xp. This is why loading up a fleet with eight capships can actually hurt you in the long run because it prevents you from levelling up quickly.

Note that you don't get experience for your own ships getting killed so if it's you with a capship versus an enemy AI fleet with a capship in a gravwell where there are no pirates or other races, only one of you will get xp for each shipkill.
