if you are allied with the ai you can give them a command by for example clicking a enemy ship and there should by a button to ask the ai allies to attack that ship

The "ping" button is supposed to give the AI an idea of what you want it to do. It has a single player function as well as a multiplayer function. But to be honest, I have never used it...yet.

It is the one below the auto place button.

Yep.

Select a friendly AI ship or planet.

You now have 3 options in the unit command menu. Defend, Attack and Cancel.

With the Defend option you can give the AI the order to defend a planet (or ship).

With the Attack option you can give the AI the order to attack a planet (or ship).

With the Cancel option, you'll cancel the current order you have given the AI (attack or defend).

AFAIK you can only have one order running with an AI at the same time. Also the AI needs time to gather a fleet and move to the location where it should do it's duties. So it can take some time.

Also, if you tell the AI to attack a planet, and have your own ships in the area, the AI will dutifully(or sometimes irritatingly) wait for you to advance first. By this I mean you have to order your fleet to move to the attack target, then they will respond alongside you. The AI is willing to help you, but won't do all your dirty work for you(a nice touch).
