What's the best counter to destra cruisers?

I played a game the other day and my opponent massed destra cruisers towards the end of the game.  I outnumbered his fleet and my fleet was nicely balanced fleet but it seemed to take forever to take this guy out and it took the combined fleet of my ally's to beat him back.   I was wondering what the best counter is to take out a mass of about 25 destra cruisers?  I'm assuming they have to have some weakness.  I had a lot of bombers but if I just build lots of bombers he'll kill my host ships before the bombers will do very much.
Thanks

Bombers and disabling ships (hoshiko has a researched ability to disable frigates and cruisers... don't' remember the other races) are pretty much what your stuck with.

Bombers and Capital ships do full damage to Heavy Cruisers. The only ship to get a bonus against Heavy Cruisers is... go figure... Heavy Cruisers. They are at the end of the ship tech tree for a reason, they're the best frigate class ship in the game.

If he's hitting you with HC's, the counter is HC's. Plus some long-range frigates, a command ship or two, some repair ships and a captial or three with bombers. ;) If he's attacking with just HC's a combined fleet of HC's + stuff should win. However, if he's attacking with a combined fleet of HC's plus support, you're simply going to need a bigger fleet than his since he's done his job correctly.

Best counters that aren't also HC's is to use support ships to disable or otherwise reduce the effectiveness of his HC's, bombers, and capital ships. If you're TEC, the Kol battleship supported by some utility cruisers and a Dunov or two if you can afford them is potent against masses of HCs.

Generally, I do lots of kodiaks supporteed by Hoshikos for repair / disabling, and Cielo's for shield regen + extra damage. Add in a carrier wing, and you can shred "pure" kodiak forces, and do severe damage to hoshiko/cielo supported Kodiaks. (Carriers also form a great anti-fighter force to take out enemy bombers... and its going to become even more so next patch. Whats nice is that fighters take out support cruisers, too).

basically against heavy cruisers, you need something that can match the DPS AND survivability. This is done by either having similar number of heavy cruisers + some support you self, or some good micromanagement of different combos. For example, if you are advent as well, get a revelation + progenitor + dominas + disciples for antimatter+ any damage (if you are confident you can micro good enough, best to use carrier w/ bombers). Of course, have revelation take damage, micro the progen's shield regen and dominas' hullrepair to keep your revelation alive, and damage+malice will dispose of destras pretty fast. OR if you have enough guardians, you can pretty much micro their repel to keep the destras from doing any damage, and use illums/bombers your self. But again the simplest thing is just to have a 'healthy' amount of HC's to match his.

I wouldn't underestimate the potency of Guardians when up against a mass number of Heavy Cruisers. Heavy Cruisers are probably the strongest unit that can be totally outranged by the Guardian's Repel ability (Capitals too, but they have wings of Strikecraft that can still come through, unless you have a Halcyon with Telekinetic Push, in which case things can get amusing).

Guardians with Repel effectively allow you to chose when to engage the Heavy Cruisers and when you want to have breathing room. Just a few Guardians with their abilities turned off Autocast (Shield Projection will otherwise eat their Antimatter over the course of a battle) and ready to let loose if things start going south can be quite an asset against a fleet that has few long range ships at it's disposal. And if things go horribly wrong and you're willing to sacrifice Guardians, they can be excellent at just holding back an enemy until your fleet makes it to the edge of the gravity well.

If Flaks weren't so incredibly cost efficient, a very heavy Carrier fleet of Advent with the Push and Repel abilities could probably be a substantial threat to a Heavy Cruiser fleet, but since Flaks are so cheap and so good, it only takes a few to effectively buy a fleet immunity from them.

But as was said, the best counter for Heavy Cruisers is often Heavy Cruisers of your own. Late game they're the pre-eminent brawlers, each of the factions have fairly good ones, all available at around the same time, so there's little reason not to have them. Supporting them with Support Cruisers will go a long way though, and if your enemy doesn't focus fire on them first, they're in for a world of hurt.

And if you're Vasari, don't forget the Subverter. Heavy Cruisers fleets tend to become very compact during a charge and at the start of battles, so they can make good targets for the Subverter's special ability.

On a related note, if your opponent is stunning your HC's with Subverters, then using the Dunov's EMP charge ability to remove the Subverters anti matter is absolutely priceless. In fact, I used to think that EMP charge wasn't that good until I realized I could essentially remove a Vasari fleet's support cruisers from combat with it.

Its not like it does anything -- a long standing complaint of mine.

I've played many games and there are basically 3 ways to counter heavy cruisers:

1) More Heavy cruisers

2) Heavy cruisers and bombers

3) Long Range Frigates (or Illums) and bombers

4) A ton of Illuminators

A couple of notes regarding this conclusion:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p7xc_snd9Cc-6o2UwvPEWUg&gid=1

Go to the link to see that there are only 2 ship types other than cap ships and more heavy cruisers that do 75% or more of their damage or more to heavy cruisers: Those would be long range frigates (in this case including the advent illuminator) and bombers.

Though bombers would do the most damage statistically to heavy cruisers due to their insane dps to begin with, carriers will get pwned by heavy cruisers because they tend to be relatively slow, and heavy cruisers chew them up like tissue paper.

A Quick Note About Carriers:
Carriers are great, but because their fighters tend to target w/e they feel like (though it is typically what they are most effective against), it is always best to group all of your fighters to ctrl#6 and bombers to ctrl#7 (or some such grouping). Doing this allows you to micro your bombers to all attack one heavy cruiser at a time. This "Everyone attack one ship at a time" strategy is particularly effective against larger ships like heavy cruisers, where the damage lost to "overkill" is minimized.

Critical Note:
I mean to make a posting on how the game tactics are affected by the fact that ships cannot explicitly target what they are not "chasing", but, partly because of this fact, because of the time it would take the heavy cruisers to catch up with the carriers, and critically because of the carrier group's ability to "scatter", it is not worth chasing carriers unless the other ships in the system are not threatening to your fleet.

Therefore, the best tactic would be to use bombers, but to prevent their carriers from "being chewed up like tissue paper". To do this, another ship type is required to prevent the heavy cruiser player from "chasing" the bombers around the system.

There are two types of ships which can do this effectively:

#1: More heavy cruisers work well at this, because they do high dps to heavy cruisers

#2: Long range frigates (including the illuminator), which, while they do less damage to heavy cruisers than more heavy cruisers, have much longer range allowing them to chase the heavy cruisers and take them down very fast if they chose to go after the carriers, and, most importantly, are much easier to have many of by the time a player gets a lot of heavy cruisers.

Therefore, I have found counter #3 at the beginning of this post to be the best way to deal with heavy cruisers, because I tend to get many long range frigates to begin with, no matter what race I am playing.

Basically, the build order for these counters is thus:

1) If you already have a fleet of long range frigates, then start pumping carriers with bombers.

2) If you do not already have a fleet of long range frigates, get heavy cruisers, because splitting production between long range frigates/heavy cruisers and carriers will typically not produce results fast enough to be an effective counter.

3) If you are playing as advent and do not have a fleet of illuminators already, it is actually plausible to start pumping nothing but illuminators to take out the heavy cruisers because they still do 100% of their damage to heavy cruisers and are pretty good, especially against the short range heavy cruisers.

CRITICAL FINAL NOTE:

Though all of these strategies work in the general case against heavy cruisers, the ones that don't involve getting heavy cruisers all have one weakness, flak frigates/sentinels/(and most crucially) defense vessels. These three anti-light frigate ships will obliterate your long range frigates while at the same time countering bombers relatively well. Also, Carriers with fighters counter long range frigates especially well, and also counter bombers for obvious reasons.

And what are the counters to flak frigates/sentinels/defense vessels and carriers?

#1: NO GOOD Light Assault Frigates NO GOOD (ie: Skirmishers/Cobalts/Deciples)
THESE ARE NO GOOD.
Light Frigates will (again like tissue paper) be torn apart by your opponents heavy cruisers.

#2: Heavy Cruisers THESE ARE YOUR BEST BET
Essentially, and many of you may have noticed this, as soon as one player starts massing heavy cruisers, everyone needs to start getting them. Bombers/(Rediculous Cap ship comos that fall apart when fleets get large due to the "everyone target the cap ship!" effect)/ long range frigates all work well against the heavy cruisers, but once your opponent starts countering your fleet types you will have to make heavy cruisers yourself.

My Conclusion:
Once you get your anti-heavy cruiser fleet
Upgrade the prototype research for your own heavy cruisers so that you can make them as soon as your opponent gets smart.
