Where did everyone go?

I am playing a DA sandbox game, normal difficulty, on a gigantic map with max players. I have set up scatterd, rare, hospitable planets. Essentially I have Earth and Mars and that is it(I am playing Terran). I was lucky and found 3 minors races each with one planet, in the same system. I took them over very early in the game, which made everyone else very nervous and essentially divded the galaxy between the good races on one side and the neutral and evil races on the other. pretty much I have 5 races which have declared war on me. I also noticed something very wierd my tax rates were very high like 71% and my apporval was also at about 80%. I didn't think too much about it until I was assulting the Inconians and making troop ships on Earth and I didn't have enough population to support filling 2 ships! I mean 2+ years or so into the game earth should have way more then 1.5 billion people. So checked my population and everywhere was super low mars has 300,000! I looked the some of the charts and noticed that all races were very low population. In fact everyone was losing population very rapidly. I have turned things around and have my approval rating up to 100%, and am currently research population growth techs. It seems like my population is gaining instead of losing population. What would cause this to happen to everyone? Has anyone else experienced the mass population loss?

Plague.

Look in the tech tree for one called "Plague/Disease Cure". It won't be on the quick list in the top left, you'll have to go down thorough the tree itself. It's a green tech, so look near the teraforming and extreme colonization techs.

Then after you learn the tech, feel free to give it to any race you still like...let the other's suffer.

This was due to a Mega Event. There should have been a cutsceen with a ship flying low over water or such and a description of people being sick.

Yes, well, having a 4 year old running around and a wife who is always finding things for me to do instead of run my empire. I tend to let things slip every so often. plus I am new to the game that in itself is a get out of jail free card.... right?  :p 

Anyways, I have researched the tech and and sold to other race for gobs of techs and cash... I made out like a bandit... plus my enemies are hurt pretty bad. This was the best thing to happen to my empire!

Every game including this one, I get the spy mega event. That one doesn't even phase me anymore I had 6 spies ready for when they struck.

This game is alot of fun. I think after this map I am going to crank the difficuly up a bit and see what happens.

Just wait till it hits you in the latter part of a game and you get hit by 50+ spy's. That akes it a bit harder to clear them all. Its a great time to do some spying of your own though as your spy's tend to last longer so you get more info from them :)

With all the mega-events there is always an upside to the initial hit, you just have to know what that upside is LOL
