ummmm..... right click the desktop > arrange icons by > uncheck auto arrange and move them where you want?

or you can get ObjectDock Plus - and have a dock on each side, then hide your icons on the desktop

or you can get ObjectDesktop and create your own desktop, and then hide the icons on the desktop

or you can get ObjectBar and create your own vertical bars for the icons, then hide the icons on the desktop

I know Jeff (developer of ObjectDock) is working on something that does exactly that.

or create a folder for the games and a folder for applications.

drop the game icons in the game folder
drop the application icons in the application folder

drag one folder all the way to the edge and beyond and let go and turn it into a toolbar, right click on the toolbar and set it to always on top and autohide

repeat with the other folder on the other side (or top)

then hide your desktop icons

or get Desktop Icon Toy - arrange them the way you want then right click the tray icon and click save layout - you can then move them around (diy does different layouts on it's own including a working clock using your icons) and when you right click the tray icon and choose restore layout they go back to where you had them when you saved it

but don't hide the desktop icons

Man! How disappointing. I thought there'd be more ways to accomplish this. ;p

You could also get Object dock+ and create 2 docks, one for each side, drag the icons on to the dock you wish.. Then right click on the desktop/arrange icons and uncheck "show desktop icons". Now you have two neat docks with all your icons, that can bet set to hide away if you wish. So you will see nothing but the wallpaper :)

You can do this with tabbed docks and organize your icons even further, perhaps by game type, folder, exe, etc.
