I had an idea about two of your allies going to war

So yesterday I was playing Twilight on a medium size map and all is going well. I had just about crushed the evil Drengin and I had set up alliances with the Terrans, the Arceans, and the Altarians. I was at the same time in a shooting war with pretty much everyone else.

So then the damn Terrans declared war on the Altarians. It was at this moment that I wished there was an option to try to talk these two down from going to war, based on your diplomacy or something. The Altarians had been so nice, so I couldn't screw them over, plus I think Eleys has a thing for me.... Anyway, the Terrans were quite powerful, so a war with them would be tough. I did the not so smart but good thing of sticking with the Altarians against overwhelming forces. I helped them as much as I could but eventually Eleys surrendered her worlds to me. After that I was stuck with pretty much everyone in the whole damn galaxy hell bent on destroying me. I held on for a long time, but eventually a damned spore ship snuck all the way through my front lines and zapped Texas, my manufacturing powerhouse. It was over for me after that.

So yeah, I think it would be kind of cool if you had at least a chance of talking say two of your allies down from going to war and picking sides. I took a reputation hit too by being forced to declare war on the Terrans who were my allies.

What do you think? I'm sure it's too late to be considered, but still.

Huh?

I'm missing something.

I haven't played as much TA as most, but I remember from DA having alliances with all remaining civs (diplo victory disabled for more destruction), key word -remaining-, and having one of them declare war on another. I got no prompt.

Also, as a note, just tested, and in DA there is no prompt when two allies go to war...or more, for that matter.

I do like your idea, though.

Did something change in TA? Like Sole Soul said (say that five times fast), in DA you don't have to pick either side, but can maintain alliances with both.

I am not sure when this was put in, but my only choice was to cancel my alliance with the Altarians and remain allied with the Terrans, or continue my alliance with the Altarians and declare war on the Terrans.

Since this is the Altarians we're talking about here...

Are you -positive- you didn't just get a prompt to go to war with the Terrans because you're of the same ethical alignment as the Altarians?

I just re-tested my DA 1.80g game and discovered that I do get an ethical war declaration prompt, even when both are allies, but I can click No on it and both alliances are preserved.

(I'm aware this isn't TA I'm using to test, but the point is still valid; I'll be glad to fire up TA and give it a shot if anyone wants.)

Even with that said, since you're -allied- with both of them, the game really shouldn't prompt at all, and just assume no...at least, I think that's what it should do.

Maybe it wasn't related to the declaration of war, but a separate prompt from the Altarians.

If B is in an alliance with me and X, and I get into a fight with X, I might turn to B and say "Pick a side. Either remail allied with X and I'll drop my alliance with you, or declare war on X to prove your alliance with me."

That's the two choices you were given. Not to drop one alliance or the other, but to drop or go to war.

In my last game in TA (Beta4), I (Drengin) was allied with the Yor, Korx and Kryn. The Yor declared war on the Korx and Kryn several times, but I never had to choose sides. In fact I persuaded the Yor to back off by giving them some techs.

I had the same thing happen in a game a couple games back. All I did was do the standard "Make peace..." offer and added a minor tech as a bribe.

Unfortunately, I was probably because I was a terran with their God-like diplomacy abilities (IIRC, I had the Diplomatic Translators Wonder too)

Just tested this in TA Beta 5. The prompt was, as I thought, due to being of an identical ethical alignment as the Altarians. I said no and am still allied with both of them. You still do not get prompted to uphold one or the other of your two alliances when your allies go to war, as it should be.

That said, if it wasn't an alignment-based prompt, there is something severely wrong with one of our games.

And I still like the idea of talking your allies out of going to war with each other, but in theory you can already do that by giving them money/etc to make peace-although this isn't preemptive, which seems to be what you're going for.
