A trial version will still be available, although at the time of writing AVG had not yet determined how many days that trial will be.

Suggests it's not the free version they are talking about, despite the implication at the beginning of the article.

I wonder if the "code rewrite" will be carried over to the Free version ...

Might be time to switch to Comodo's free software (I'm just waiting until the Anti-Virus leaves beta to switch from AVG Free). http://www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html

Looks like the free version ain't being updated to version 8, yet. Free version on Grisoft website remains at version 7.5 and the trial and paid version is now 8.

They did this the last time there was a major update.  :SURPRISED:

I think they would like all of us to get the paid version, imagine that. ;)

If we all wait a little while the free version will more than likely get updated.  :NOTSURE:

(Wishes of a long time user of the free version, oh please, please, please update the free version)

I use 7.5 and have never had a problem or slow down at all. It is an excellent program. I'll stick with 7.5 until its' functionality is verified by those who are braver than I am about such thingies. Then free or not if I have a problem with it, first glitch and off it goes ...!

Comodo (free) has an excellent firewall. I believe still only no.2 under Online Armor's (paid) according to in-depth testing by Matousec. Avast (IMHO, and many reviews) is a superior AV program to Comodo's in the free software category. I have used NOD32 (paid) for 5 years and found it to be a superior AV program, and the new 3.0 version has a new and more user friendly UI for newer users.
