Another strange problem...

On Shutdown of Vista I see for 5 seconds - SCHTASKS.EXE failed to initialize - then it disappears and machine shuts down. No other problems observed using the machine. Appreciate any help in solving this Error message!!!

Do you have any scheduled tasks?

I checked earlier and just now. Nope. None. :NOTSURE:

Odd . . Google only returned a few hits with that error . . and no good solutions.

If you are not using a scheduled task you could disable it.  I'd use TweakVista.

Go to the Services tab.  Then the advanced tab.  then scroll down to Task Sceduler and set it from automatic to manual.

problem (sorta) fixed.

I'd rather wait till I can buy TweakVista to use it.

Anyhow I went into Control Panel and into Services. Vista will NOT let me disable Task Scheduler. All options are grayed out.

I didn't think you could disable it . . but I did think you could prevent it from starting by setting it to "manual" next you booted.
One more example of me being wrong.   (:(  :NOTSURE:

That option is grayed out as well...

Every time I try to uncheck it in MSConfig it re-checks itself to start...

Very annoying little problem!

kona, can you find it in the services? try typing services.msc in the run box.....

assuming Vista will let you do that. does Vista have a run box? hmmm.......

Kill the Auto Update feature in Java CP.

Killajosh - Vista has a search box in the start menu. Typing in a program usually starts it.

Yrag - thank you. We will see if that works.

OK. I just rebooted. Sorry Yrag. That pop up is still happening. I guess killing the Java auto-update had no effect on it.

Un-install Java and see if it goes away.

Note: Before you do that, make sure you have no other apps that have an active scheduler running in Tasks.

I un-installed Java. Performed a shutdown and restart and yet we still have that pop-up. Getting rid of Java didn't do the trick.

I don't see any tasks in task scheduler. I haven't created any. There any some system tasks listed. Here they are:

I already deleted the anything to do with Java in the list.
Shall I delete the rest? I don't use any of them that I know of...

What a load of HP crap.....I'd dump them all.

Look in Event Viewer and see if it's showing any errors related to shutdown.
Unloaded all those tasks. I'll perform a shutdown here shortly and report back.

Event viewer has no info about this problem that I can see.
OK the pop-up is gone. Must have been all that HP related crap.

I have a different problem to ask you about though Yrag. From the time I push the power button to the time I can execute a program on the computer is still about 3 or 4 minutes.

I have a Celeron 420, 2 GB of DDR2 5300 RAM.

My startup programs are:

McAffee AV
Open Office Quickstart
COMODO Firewall
Trillian
Realtek HD audio manager

Should I install the current Vista SP1 build to get some more speed?

This will probably be my last response here Kona.....I have neither the time nor inclination to deal with these fucking Stardock servers any longer. You can email me (if you no longer have my email addy, PM me once and I'll send it to you).

First off, don't forget to re-install Java and turn off the update feature. You could have saved yourself the bother. I did tell you not to un-install until you checked for other active schedulers running ...which you had a ton. When you're in my class, pay attention... ;)

As to the boot time. If I had to guess (and I do) my money is on COMODO. It has/had a rep for "forgetting" settings and thus when you boot up it is re-evaluating all the programs that start up. The faster the machine...the faster the process (4 minutes is just plain unacceptable on anything). The easiest way to check is to prevent it from loading on Startup. (Note: do not un-install it until you determine it as the source of the problem and one you can't live with). I know a while back the problem was discussed and, as far as I know, addressed, so make sure you have the latest build.

Let me know...just somewhere else.

Christ ! that's bloody slow even the comp i'm on when it had the 5400rpm hd ,256mb of ram & needed a defrag as well as the hdd being full could still boot xp in under 2 min's.

Assuming comodo is'nt the culprit & since i don't have vista i can only go by what i did with xp to get things moving along, which basicly means trial & error, for starters tech republic has articles & pdf's on speeding up boot time of vista, both links provided below are to the same article, the next step is do you really need stuff in the startup like "quick start office", adobe has the same startup entry & other startup entry nonsense that hp are only too happy to supply, plus crap like hpsysdrv in task manager etc, other than that it's a matter of tweaking this n that.
