omigosh piracy

omigosh piracy

Hey,

I thought you guys at Stardock were curious if your strategy of luring pirates to play your games through (*ahem* economics) added utility and copy-protection free games worked.

I'm an uber pirate. I hail from South East Asia. Me, my mates, my family, and everyone I frigging know pirates everything from watches to cars to explosives to software to porn even. Lots of valid reasons for this that I won't get into simply because of selective reader perception which is probably impossible to counter.

Anyway, me and my mates have all bought this game. Every single one of us. Extreme pirates who took the cheapest price for anything without a care in the world went out of their way to buy this product.

Added info:
Purchasing power parity between Malaysia and US is almost equal.
Exchange rate for 1 Malaysian Ringgit to 1 US dollar is 3.3
What this means is that we paid $165 each for this game.

That's just how awesome this game is. Keep up the good work.

p.s: Please don't report me to RIAA or anything like that. I don't have anything pirated here in Canada. Can't afford any storage mediums.

Dude like whatever...Piracy is a serious issue overhere and its just not funny anymore...parody or not.

Uh huh.

Aku ingin tahu bagaimana kau hidup di sana jikalau kau tak guna item ciplak. Guna itu DVD9 yang kau beli dari taukeh kat pasar, atau "Adidas" baru tu yang kau beli kat Chou Kit. Semua benda kat Malaysia buatan ciplak lah, kau apa? 12 tahun? Tiada satu orang Malaysia yang tak guna benda ciplak.

Jika kau, sebagai si penduduk Malaysia yang amat terharga, boleh hilangkan semua barang ciplak tanpa menghampa kehidupan si penduduk Malaysia lain sambil menurunkan harga buatan asli yang terlalu mahal... dipersilakan.

You mouthing about how big of a deal it is isn't going to make the problem disappear. Neither is blaming people who draw attention to the problem in the first place.

Speeding a school zone is worse than piracy. This thread needs a hefty dose of a fucking clue and a slight reality check.

We're talking about photocopying a piece of paper someone else wrote.

Dude...Im not a kid and yes i dont buy pirated goods...And surprise surprise Im Malaysian...

I do my part in educating people about what they can do...and its doesnt involve me posting just in this forum...I find it odd how people can afford to get the new and latest mobile phones and the best hardware(quad core and 8800Ultras) but not being able to afford a game?

fragieD: Its so easy to consider the whole country to consist only of upper middle class, isn't it? But never you mind. Debating on the internet is silly and ridiculous and doesn't really accomplish anything.

But no matter how much you saw piracy sucks, I have a chart and you don't. BEHOLD!

Mmm.. yeah. It's gotten out of hand. It was just supposed to be a parody and even I got drawn into the ensuing mess. Apologies.

Wait what? You have explosives on the list and you use the "even" for porn?

how is it trolling? the guy is making a joke how the game / company / publisher are so good that even uber pirates BUY them...

This is someone saying "I buy this even though I pirate everything else"...
I don't see how its trolling or bad. In fact its basically users complimenting stardock's policy about DRM.

I love that piracy vs global temperatures graph.. it's about as scientific (and probably true) as the stuff trotted out by climate warming mongers :)

Interestingly, the church of the flying spaghetti monster has that very graph! We need more pirates (sea faring types, arrrrr)

"Property is theft, therefore theft is property... Therefore, the ship is mine."

At any rate, the intellectual property capitalists could learn a lot from what you guys are doing here. I continue to be impressed by your ideas and their success.

Well done.

People often forget USA law isnt international law :) (Anyone remeber the piratebay incident lolz)

Here in the Netherlands we can freely download any copyrighted music and movies. We may not distibute or upload it though. So when i do that I am neather stealing or breaking the law of the country I live in thus not commiting any crime :P For sofware its different we cant download it (hurah for ze software companies)

Good for you we have a convert again. A lot of so called pirates will pay when the product is good and has replay value. Its apperant most people do not agree with the copyright laws as they are right now especially in the USA. When forced into something you dont agree with you will see an increasing ammount of offenders. And can you really blaim em? :)

Super, if you don't follow our (US) laws, we will bring democracy to your country.

what really bugs me more than anything in the world is how many high horses there are.
chances are a good % of the people that posted here have pirated a piece of softwear at somepoint in there life.

instead of crapping someone out for pirating thank him for buying it
you might get a better reaction

You know, if the OP hadn't pirated this game, Stardock wouldn't have 2-5 extra sales from him telling his friends.
And his friends might tell other friends.

And stop bitching and moaning about piracy; most people download music and movies that I know.

that is so true

I make a statement with my money. I could have pirated Sins. I didn't because I support the creators. I want more of Sins so I am giving my money as a means of showing this and supporting this.

Dirty communists is who. And we WILL bring democracy (read, our brand of capitalism) to their country and end their silly non US lawness...ness!

What I find most odd about the OP is the fact that he encourages companies to remove copy protection when he would benefit dramatically from that effect.
Wait, so asking for things that make lifestyles easier = bad?

Man, have I been living life wrong.
That is not what I am getting at. He is a thief and has made it very clear he steals just about every piece of software he gets his hands on. He only now buys this game to support removing protection that would benefit his pirating activities.

I personally have no qualms with removing copy protection and am thankful to Stardock that I do not have to deal with it, but I just don't understand what message the OP is really trying to convey. Is he saying that if all companies removed copy protection then he would never pirate another game? LMAO. That is so laughable. Sure I am glad he did the right thing for once in his life and I am glad he supported both Ironclad and Stardock. It is unfortunate that the very thing he chose to support, promotes a way to make his stealing easier.

While he did not say it or possibly intend to convey this, the message I got was that the OP is saying that he made an investment in piracy. If he can get all of the other pirates on board to buy this game, then maybe other companies will loosen up so they can go back to their old ways less burdened.

Look a responsible pirate! I think you've just demonstrated what made this game such an easy sale for me and an easy recommendation to many friends. It's sold at a fair price, it's in a finished state (tweaks and imperfections are normal--broken UI's, server browsers, network play, cd-key saving, game save keeping, etc. *cough*UT3/Gears*cough* are NOT acceptable), the game is a lot of fun to play despite some drawbacks, the gameplay is addicting, the visuals are good, the engine scales to hardware so almost anyone can play, and the product assumes you purchased it instead of immediately thinking you stole it (*cough*Bioshock*cough*...really oppressive copy-protection). Easy, regret-free sale.

I don't know if Ironclad/Stardock people are reading this thread, but you may just be the first company to try to understand why piracy happens instead of mindlessly trying to stomp on it without realizing the root. You may also have accidentally stumbled on something here, but I hope you try to understand it. The music industry learned this and dropped their prices to dollar tracks, and now they're making way more money than what they ever did with the more expensive approaches. Exploration into offering content without copy-protection is also yielding higher returns than ever before because people have no hesitations about paying for quality stuff for a fair price. Some people will always pirate things, but they wouldn't have bought the product to begin with so it's not a lost sale, contrary to what the copy-protection companies say. Most of the video game industry has yet to learn what the music industry did. Unfortunately, the movie industry is also going in the wrong direction.

For anyone arguing that piracy is acceptable, what do you think of copyright infringement? If Microsoft used some of its massive liquid assets to purchase a factory and pump out Lysol with a stolen recipe, would you think that is wrong? That is stealing intellectual property, the same as pirating a game.
