Replay: The Power of Military Research

Rokkit and Conan vs Leinad and Willburn

A great 2v2 replay highlighting the power of military research, and that sins isn't as slow as many people claim.

For my part, i played the first 20 minutes poorly, invading the desert planet knowing leinad was near was bad play on my part.

However after that, i feel i many little or no mistakes considering i had the first pirate invasion, and willburn helped 2v1 me very early. After that my job was just to harrass while conan tried to win the major battles, and i achieved this by attacking weird undefended planets, forcing leinad and willburn to move units away from the major battles

As conan was able to expand early, and saw i was in trouble, he built no civic research labs all game, and focused on getting the best fleet possible. This worked great, and with some clever micro, and well co-ordinated attacks, we were able to turn the tide

Once i had forced leinad to defend himself also, conan was free to go at willburn 1v1, which he won comfortably with his superior capital ships and combat research.

This replay highlights the importance of military research, and also disprooves 2 popular opinions:
1. Game is too slow
2. Once behind in a 2v2, it is impossible to pull it back

i think i made a mistake with not going for culture after i took the desert.
Though it was a really good and intense game.

Just watched the game, and it was fun and enjoyable to watch.

I put on the cinimatic option and watched the big battle 49 minutes into the game. It looked amazing, really something special. Truely a great game thats going to be a classic.

You both made online play look fun, and it gives hope to those that do not have all day to play a game.

Kye.

From my point of view (willburn) this game would have been different if i had not expanded on the third terrain planet. I should have gotten more millitary instead I got greedy. You may also notice im scouting conan at the point before i expand on the third planet. I was really considering attacking instead of expanding and I think that would have made the game different.

Also I dont think this is a great game :) But it does show that this game does not have to last 1 hour to get fun.

if anyone is unsure of how to download and play the replay, here's how:

1. Create a shortcut on desktop to "C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Windows Logon]\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games"
2. Download the replay and unzip it to desktop
3. Open up the shortcut you made earlier, and make your way to the multiplayer recorded games section
4. Place the unzipped .record file from your desktop into this folder
5. Boot up the game and select single player, then watch games. Change save type until multiplayer recorded games shows, and select the replay

Actually, having watched the replay in detail, it looks more like fleet cap won the day. I only researched a couple of the 1st level techs plus lrm and siege, but the sheer size of my fleet was overwhelming any opposition by the end.

Either way, I didn't build a single civilian research lab.

The scrap yards and gas giant gave me a huge edge that I barely had to fight for. I suspect these will be fought over more thoroughly in future.

Also amazing to see that Rokkit barely lost a single frig after about 45 min!?!

Wilburn, re the "good vs light frigate" ships mentioned ingame, I'm sure that in more equal sized fleets they make more difference, but remember that you were only sending in a handful against 30 light frigs and 20 odd lrms, so they aren't going to swing things to that extent. Also, the advent ships are generally cheaper and weaker than tec ship for ship, so you would need to more than match frigate numbers.

Also worthy of note is that the siege frigs haven't been overnerfed as part of a mixed fleet.

This was one of the more fun games I've played; the action was intense from very early on, and the Battle of Vietoris was truly epic! It was also good to see the game take a different route to a typical 2v2 - the replay shows some different strategic options to the norm that imo are superior.

Wait, which folder does this go in? As I haven't played or recorded any multiplayer games, my data folder has plenty of single player related folders, and a couple multiplayer related folders, but none marked as being both multiplayer and recording related.

Am I correct in assuming that creating a folder named Record-MultiPlayer and putting it there will work?

Ok. That was the correct folder. I watched the record, and... no, this is not an example of the superiority of military research. Both sides had nearly equal research in to the military trees. Both ignored the civilian side entirely. One simply had a bigger fleet than the other.

And yes, the 'strong vs' text assumes in a 1v1 fight at equal or near equal health levels. Not in 5v30 combat.

(Note, I suck at RTSes, so everything I might be saying is quite possibly a lie.)

i do agree also having watched it again that the fleet cap upgrade and early units from conan, combined with my harrasing of willburns back planets was the reason we were able to win.

Conan LRMs won it for you man. That's the weakness of Advent that their Javelin equivalent takes 3 research stations. You can't still be spamming basic frigate 40 minutes into the game :/ Will might have pulled the strike craft off, but i doubt he would have enough crystal. Both of your sides had very basic economies as well.

Lol at Will for trying to run from Akkan. I would never leave my capital in that long, especially not with Akkan around.

This recording crashes for me every single time @ 5:44 minutes. Always right on that second.

Instant freeze-lockup + mini-dump

Are you on 1.02? I'm having the same issues with about every other replay, this one worked fine so far, I guess it's incompatibility between patches.

To the OP: Could you state the game version in the filename in the future?
Yup. I'm on version 1.02 and it crashes exactly at 5:44 every time I try to view it.

The replays say "INVALID REPLAY" in the selection menu if they don't work with the current version. If people are dumb enough to load them up anyway - what do you expect?

Anyhow, I sent my minidump and this replay to support. Hopefully get a reply.
