A dream within a dream

Edgar Allan Poe

It's a straight cut and paste - but I couldn't set up a blog without one of my faourite poems:

A Dream Within a Dream
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Ahhh.... a poem manifested so beautifully on screen in Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock. Still send chills down my spine to this day.

It's great isn't it? And so very sad...

I love Poe. He's one of my all time favorite authors.

>>Picnic at Hanging Rock

A brilliant but frustrating film. I want to know what happened to them! But it doesn't really matter what happened to them, since, ultimately, that's not what the film is about. Darn literature!

After reading this, I went over to The Interent Movie Database and read up on Picnic at Hanging Rock. It seems there was an extra chapter removed from the book that explained what actually happened to the girls. If you want to know, you can go here to read about it.

It's not very good, though. I think we were better off not knowing.

Funny thing is, I've actually been to 'hanging rock' in Australia - the rock formations were otherwordly and fantastic. And I saw the movie... but I must have missed the bit about ol' Edgars poem cause I've never linked the story of those girls with the verse. Btw, I saw them all when I was on the rocks, they were playing Zelda on a massive flatscreen tv in a little rock hollow near the summit - they were stoned and laughing and talking about how rich they got off the story of their mysterious dissapearance, clever buggers.

I think the movie starts with a quote from the poem.

Even that's a better denouement!
