logonui.exe is a system process relating to the Microsoft Windows XP user switching screen. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

LogonXP files are Files Run By LogonXP. A program built by stardock..

the 2 are not the same..............

have you seen this: http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/windowsxplogonhack.php

or the short version of using logonui.exe courtesy of bFarber:

1. In Explorer, browse to C:\Windows\System32 and find the file named "logonui.exe".
2. Rename "logonui.exe" to "logonui.exe.bak". This way if anything messes up...you have a backup.
3. Place your new login in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and rename it to logonui.exe.
4. That's it! Now when you log off your new login screen will be there.

Logon Studio creates a file called .logonuiX.exe that it uses in C:\Windows\System32 as the logon.

When it's uninstalled or deactivated, Windows will use logunui.exe as the logon. It doesn't mess with any system files.

You clearly have some problem with your system files. It's a simple program and can not cause any harm to anything.

I have tried that and it didn't work.

In Defence is one you don't want to open in 'edit' in LogonStudio - any logon that's been modifed get's the modification reverted back to standard when opened in edit and it screws them up

did you fix your logonui.exe back to original?

LogonStudio may not work if you use a modified logonui.exe
Reply #57 Top
Yes the logonui.exe is back to original. The stock XP screens are back. I tried to install the In Defence logons. I did not modify it. It showed up in the preview window and that was it. When I hit the apply button. All I got was the default logon boxes.

any other 3rd party logon changer?

All I've tried was LogonStudio. I was reading on ResHacker. But that allows you to change the bmp's in logonui.exe. But it does replace it in the system32 directory.

what netframework version(s) do you have installed - check add/remove

I think LS needs version 1.1

It has

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hot Fix

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Btw whats going on with this forum? It's like everyother post I put up it takes forever. I have to leave the site wait a while and then come back and post it. I never seen any other forum act this way.

Do you mean classic style dialog window for username and password?
Control panel-User Accounts-Change the way users log on and off, make sure use the welcome screen and use fast user switching are checked. If that does not work, are you on a domain, if so LogonStudio will not work on a domain.
Yes they are checked, they been checked ever since I installed XP. It seems that if you try to load a logon screen with LogonStudio and it doesn't go right. You end up with no screen, just the classic style dialog window for username and password.

Do you clear your browser cache/temp internet files regulary?
sometimes, I think it slows down whilst the SD team is battling SpamBots sneaking in...

good question... you kept mentioning default logon boxes... which ones?
What happens if you hit 'ctrl+alt+del'?

I can post one post wait sau a couple minutes and then try to post another then it takes for ever. So no I don't clear the cache. I'm still on the site.

You never seen seen default logon boxes? And when I hit ctrl+alt+del the task manager pops up.

And what domain? I'm sitting right on my compuer.

I've seen several logon boxes

the ones at home and the ones at work

when you're on a domain and hit ctrl+alt+del you don't get Task Manger
if you're not logged on you get a default uer id/password/domain logon (though domain can be hidden leaving just user/password) and if you are logged on you get about six boxes for choices which include task manager

I'm sitting right on my compuer
End of quote

bear in mind, seen lots of posts where poster says the same thing, just neglects to mention it's their work computer

did you ever get a message giving you a choice on whether LS is the default editor?
did you say yes?

are you the only user? I've one or two posts where a single user had problems, but creating another account resolved it

I'm on my home computer. And I'm the only user. And when I get this LS is the default editor I said yes because if you say no. Then LS doesn't run.

just checking...

a post not too long ago was having issue with xp default only showing up, but the poster had kept checking 'no' cuz they didn't understand the question.

see if creating another account (then reboot) wakes it up

if not... crap.... only suggestion I got is to set it default xp logon, uninstall, delete the folder, reboot, get a fresh download, reinstall, reboot.. then see if the logons that come with it work

if it does.. try one of Boss' and see it it works (don't try to edit Boss')

Airbrush, if it comes to that make sure you either uninstall through SDC or use a registry sweeping program. If Logon Studio has registry entries that are left behind, then it still won't work with a fresh install.....
Ok I uninstalled LofonDtudio again and went into the Registry and took every single LogonStudio entry out. I just reinstalled LogonStudio and tried one of boss0190 logon screens and it works for now.

Now so you all know. When using LogonStudio. I found that if you tried to load a .logonxp file alone does nothing. You must go into the LogonStudio's folder and create a folder called what ever you want. Heres mine C:\Progtam Files\LogonStudio\Windows Vista Ultimate Large logon. Now I take my file called Windows Vista Ultimate Large.logonxp and change it to a zip. Like this Windows Vista Ultimate Large.logon.zip and extract it to that folder I created in LogonStudio. Now when you run LogonStudio. You now can load that file that would not load when it was call Windows Vista Ultimate Large.logonxp. It took me way to much time to fix this mess.

I also found out why I was having problems. I kept changing the background image and the user image. That cause a lot of the problems of me of not having a logon screen. The user image I changed to a .bmp but that was not enough. I needed to change it to a Windows Bitmap with Alpha. When I did this everything fell into place and worked. I am now a happy camper with a Vista logon screen that looks just like my real Vista logon screen but with the user image I wanted.

Thank you for putting up with me.

Now onto trying to figure out how change the Icons from XP to Vista. I have the whole set of Vista icons.
