Out of Memory Errors in 1.8e

Recieving Out of Memory Errors

The same thing is happening to me too. I don't understand why this is happening. I upgraded to 1.8c on saving games. I have 2 GB RAM. I am running Vista family Media. I should not be getting the memory errors. I am also updated to 1.08e for the updates to the game. When I check the task manager too I am at around 1.5GB too. Also I have brought down the graphics to a low. The Worlds graphics and at 0. The game brings up the error, then it crashes and shuts the application down.

This Bug is keeping me from continuing the games. How can i fix it? I have brought down the graphics quality to half. But for a game like this, I should not have these problems. I play Civilization IV, and I do not have these problems. I am wandering before any of these updates i never had this issue.

What can be done to fix this issue?

Thank You.

I'm going to go try out the test build, but i'm also experiencing this problem. Will report back if that helps.

Just tried it Cari - Still the same problem. Same thing, gets upto 1.5gb and goes crazy, happened every time I saved it, but weird graphics glitches when it was playing prior to saving.

Problem is it crashes but doesn't leave me a Debug.err

I have Vista x64 - Radeon X1650XT with the latest drivers (11/21/07 - today) 4GB of RAM and 5000mb of VM

Will come back to report more if I find out more.

This is happening while I am playing the Star Trek Mod. I do not understand what can be draining the memory. I have been playing this game for a while, and it has started to do this to me recently with these updates.

Any updates from Stardock that they might know what is happening?

I've just had it, trying to submit my score to Metaverse ...

I was starting to get them again, too, always when attempting to save a game. However, it did not crash the game, thankfully. I was able to Alt-tab to 2 different "out of memory" dialogues, click OK on both, and then go back to the game. At this point, I was able to save the game without any trouble. Took a few minutes, but aside from the inconvenience I could work around it, and eventually finished the game and submitted it OK to the metaverse.

i am constantly getting an out of memory error when i go to save the game. When i tab out of the game, it takes forever for me to get back into it. This only happens when i go to save the game and is extremely frustrating. i have 5gb of RAM in this machine... i just don't understand what could possibly be the issue... This has been an ongoing problem with this game... which is quite fun, if i could ever REALLY get into it without one error or the other crashing the game.

Thanks for playing the mod Leonedas, but try the game without the mod and see if its still happening to you, may take a little longer in a real GalCiv2 game to get it, but I'm getting it in both Star Trek Mod and the regular DA game.

I just don't want any developers thinking its just coming from the mod, because its coming from both....are all of us using Vista? I was kind of worried that may have something to do with it as well.

Is it only happening with our Mod?

I am also having this error. I updated to the latest build via stardock central well into a game with a Gigantic map (I control roughly 430 of 750 worlds) and now every 6 or 7 turns, I get the out of memory error. I'm running XP Pro on a Athalon 3400+ ATI Radeon 1300 Pro SB Audigy 4. (all new drivers, my HD crashed last month, requiring a new HD) my virtual memory is set at 4gig and I have 1 gig of ram.

I am NOT running the Star Trek mod...

I'm not running the Star Trek mod, either.
Though now that you mention it, it looks like it might be fun! :)

i just don't get it! i have not been able to complete a game since i got this game. Seriously. And worst of all, is the out of memory error only appears when you go to save the game! What the heck is that?!!! i spend all day playing a game, and want to save the thing to go to bed... and i can't! i have 5gb of RAM? Something needs to be done. This is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS!

Seriously 1.8e broke this game for me, and the 1.8f fix didn't help. How about reposting the 1.8d build?

1.8d had a crash bug with custom races, so if I reposted it, I would get lots of people reporting that bug.

I've updated the test build here:

https://forums.galciv2.com/?aid=167594#1383621

I made a change that I hope will help with the memory errors, but this really has me stumped because the bug is not happening in Twilight and from doing a comparison of the source code of 1.80 to 1.80f, none of the changes looks like it could have caused the memory error.

I've also started having these problems, but only since updating. I updated yesterday the 5th Dec and tried again. The version straight from the disc had no problems of this sort. It's basically causing some of my ships to have transparent parts and in the ship design screen, when using a previous template, the parts boxes across the top of the screen are mostly blank so it's showing an extra has been fitted, but not which one. The transparent parts tend to be where there would normally be an 'engine' exhaust.

Unfortunately I'm at work at the moment so can't post a debug.err.

Enteralterego,

Your problem is probably not a memory issue.  Can you please send your debug.err from My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar, a zipped save game with a ship design that exhibits the problem and a screenshot of what you see when you try to design a ship using the template to gc2bugs@stardock.com? Please make sure that the save game is zipped or it will get corrupted.

You can create a screenshot in game by hitting CTRL and the Printscreen button.  It will be saved to your My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar\Screenshots.

Cari,

I downloaded and installed 1.8g, and the only difference it made on my system was that the initial menu took 3X longer to load. I've tried sending SE bug reports, but SE can never find its zipped exceptions folder, and I can't find it manually. Here are the details I have (also sent in as a bug report):

I get three basic kinds of crashes:

1) the most common occurs when I try to save a game. The save-game screen freezes. If I switch out of the game, I get a popup telling me I am out of memory.

- Most of the time, this is followed by a popup suggesting I increase virtual memory; in these cases, I can reenter the game and save again. About 1/4 of the time, I then get another crash-on-save (goto start of this paragraph);

- Sometimes I don't get the second popup. 1/4 of the time I can reenter the game anyway, 3/4 of the time, the game just closes.

2) second most common also occurs when I hit the save game. The save-game screen freezes. If I switch out of the game, or if I wait for a very long time (ca. 15 minutes?), I get a popup telling me that GalCiv2 had to close. The program will eventually close on its own, and my game is gone.

3) the third most common happens on loading a game. It happens if I try to start a game with abundant planets on a gigantic galaxy, or with a saved game if it has been a long time since I rebooted my machine. The game goes straight to the "this program had to close" screen as in #2 above. Lately, once it does this, it won't load ANY GC2:DA game, even a new one, until I reboot.

4) very rarely, the game will stop and I'll get dumped to windows with no popup. My taskbar will then inform me that my display device had a driver failure and recovered. I am assuming that this is not related. I don't know how memory is allocated ona laptop with Vista and a high-end graphic card (which, I understand, use machine RAM rather than having their own), but I guess that could be part of it... maybe?

Here's my system info:

Machine: Dell Inspiron 1520 (laptop)
Operating System : Windows XP Unknown - (6000.vista_gdr.070828-1515)
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Sound Card : Speakers (SB Xtreme Audio Noteb
DirectX version : 4.09.00.0904
RAM: 4 gb + 8+ gb VM

Thanks for all your efforts!

Jon

Cari - I've had this problem as well - but I can't reproduce the bug as it vanished on a reload, the fleet bug and the 'missing part bug' seem to happen together.

I'll try describe the problem - (Playing Drengin DA campaign), when designing a ship all the parts show in the bar across the top of the design screen as you go - except the extras which show only blank boxes - the extras show on your design fine.
The second part of this bug is that the 'yellow engine' extra part vanished after you fitted more than one.

Version 1.80e.098
System Spec;
Windows XP (service pack 2)
Intel Pentium HT 4 (dual core) 3.80 GHz 3.79 GHz
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS (320mb) driver 163.75 whql
2 GB system ram
Xear 3D onboard sound (latest driver)

Testing out the new build Cari! Thanks for all the effort

yea im playing a custom race on the 1.8g build and i get out of memory error on the 4th save consistently like clockwork. It started happening on the 1.8e build where it would get that on the autosave only but now its switched to every 4th save no matter how its initiated.

I left GalCiv2 running on my testbox in AI test mode, autosaving every other turn, all yesterday and all last night and it still hasn't run out of memory.  This suggests to me that the leak isn't happening in game.  Do those of you who are getting this error save and reload a lot? Or hit CTRL+N a lot?  If the leak is in the code that is supposed to clean up between games, that would explain why I've been unable to find it.

I found something that might be causing a memory leak when loading a game from within a game or starting a new game from within a game, and I updated the test build here if anyone wants to try it:
